The call to her arms, Chapter 1

She shook her head vigorously to dismiss the thought… And that’s when she saw them.

A patrol… Three of them… Amongst whom, one officer… They were walking around the fountain, and were about to pass her.

She shuddered… She had to think of her options. Leave the bench and walk away?… That would be much too obvious… No, she had to stay where she was.

She tried to stay calm and took a deep breath. Then, smiling as she pretended to watch some children playing with small wooden boats on the other side of the big fountain, she waited, her heart pounding loudly in her chest.

The patrol got closer, and a shiver ran down her spine as she felt the scrutinizing eyes on her. The sound of the loud steps on the gravel suddenly stopped, and she held her breath, the beat of her heart now echoing in her ears.

There was a pause that seemed to last forever, but that was only a few seconds, and during which she kept the pretence of admiring the children, despite the fear she felt inside. Then finally, the steps resumed behind her and she heard them walk away.

She slowly let out the breath she had been holding, and tried to calm her heart as best as she could. It had been close… She suddenly thought about Becky and Sam and started to panic. What if they had met a patrol themselves, or been discovered in their hideaway?… She had to go to them… Now. She would think about the situation later, and she would find a way. She had to…

She got up and turned around to leave… And then her heart stopped.

Three pairs of cold eyes… All of them on her.

She hadn’t heard them come back. And she was painfully aware that her surprise mixed with the fear she felt in that moment couldn’t be disguised this time.

One of the soldiers came closer.

    “Papieren Bitte!!”

She started to panic, and tried to think quickly. Obviously, there was no way she was going to show them her real documents, so she nodded and pretended to search in her purse.
