The call to her arms, Chapter 1

But inside she was totally disoriented, and panicked… and scared.

But more than anything, she was fuming.

She had gone to the meeting, in one of the small streets behind the Sorbonne. Her contact, Leon, had showed up, but then everything had gone very fast. He had taken the money and given her a package telling her that it contained fake documents and the details of a secret meeting point for the following night, but then he had instructed her not to open it until after he was gone.

Of course she should have suspected something at that point, and now she was pissed at herself for being so careless. What was she thinking? Her fear for their safety and her hurry to get their escape sorted out had totally blinded her. And yet, a few weeks before their awful arrest, her father had warned her.

“A terrible evil has entered this world, Tina. Your trust can save your life… But it can also lead to your death sentence.”

The words resounded in her head as she thought back to the meeting. Of course the only papers she had found in the envelop were old cuttings of cardboard and newspapers…

As the awful reality of the situation had dawned on her and started to overwhelm her whole being, she had not been able to hold back the flow of her tears. But when she had realized that she was drawing attention from people around her, she had started walking hurriedly through the streets until she had reached the park.

By that time, she had succeeded in regaining her composure. She was devastated inside but in the last few weeks, she had had no choice but learn how to master her emotions and even often mask them with opposite ones… And she was a fast learner.

She reached the fountain and found a bench. She needed time to think… To assess the situation… To evaluate their options… To assure their safety…

Her thoughts went to Becky and Sam. They were counting on her. She was all they had. She had tried to reassure them about her brother and her parents, but she knew… In the space of the few months they had been hiding, she had heard rumors… Terrible rumors.
