“Bette!” Kit interrupted her friend’s swearing in a shush gesture, and motioned toward Sam who was still sitting on his mother’s lap in the adjacent room.
By that time, Tina had walked closer to the kitchen door, but was still out of Bette’s sight.
The brunette turned toward the mother and her son. She didn’t need to ask… It wasn’t the first time that she came back to find some unexpected “guests” in the living room.
“Where are they from?” She whispered.
“Alsace…” Kit replied, “But when they had to evacuate the region, they resettled near Orleans.”
Bette gave a slight nod. She would ask for the details later. She looked at them again, a serious look on her face, then suddenly, her face broke into a gentle smile and she declared,
“Well, let’s welcome our visitors, shall we?”
And with that, she walked into the room and headed toward the boy and his mother. She smiled at Becky and raised her hand,
“Hi, I’m Bette! Please feel welcome… You’re safe here!””
The young mother shook the brunette’s hand,
“I’m Becky… Thank you so much for your help!” She said with gratitude.
Then she gestured toward her son who was nestled into her shoulder.
“And this is my son, Sam.”
Bette looked at him with a bright smile and knelt down.
“Hey Sam… I’m very happy to meet you!”
He stared back at her shyly but remained snuggled up against his mother.
The brunette then noticed the drawings on the table.
“Hey… What do we have here?” She said, picking up the sheets. Then she exclaimed “Wow… Look at those beautiful drawings!”
She looked at the boy.
“Did you make these, Sam?”
The boy smiled, his attention finally picked by the woman in front of him, and after a few moments he nodded shyly.
Bette gave him a big smile.
“Well, you know what I think, Sam?… I think you’re going to be a great artist some day!”
The boy’s face suddenly lit up and straightening up on his mother’s lap, he pointed at the kitchen door and proudly exclaimed,
“That’s what Aunt Tina said!”
The brunette stared back at him in confusion, and seeing that he was still looking over her shoulder with a grin, she turned around…
… And their eyes found each other again.

But I won’t… I am so glad to see your name on the front page again that I am grinning from ear to ear…. Reading this agin brought as many goosebumps as it did the first 20 times that I read the chapter the day you sent it to me! You are an amazing writer with a rare sensibility which shows in your life and in your words….. Thanks so much for posting this story. You picked a very interesting time and location for this. Lots of tension, drama and heartbreak are inevitable given the circumstances. I hope Bette and Tina can find strength and solace in each other to get them through it all.

My dad was stationed in England and got lost in France on a mission, the resistance got him out, it was one of the very few stories he told.
Sweet mother of pearl Kw – 20 pages to “set the scene”!?! It’s like Christmas come early (LOL). This is BRILLIANT! I’ve always had a fascination with WWII and Civil War based stories. The opening evokes an array of emotions that are so palpable and hint at the intrigue to come that it sucked me in right away. I’m looking forward to seeing where you take us on this journey. All I can say is Godspeed to our gals. Patiently but eagerly looking forward to your next chapter :)
