The call to her arms, Chapter 1

    Chapter 1

It was early, and the air still bore the refreshing remnants of the fading night’s coldness.  This was her favorite part of the day, and as she started her slow ascent of the small hill, she couldn’t help but smile at the singing of the early-rising birds, the only sound that could be heard in the peaceful place and that always welcomed her daily visits.

The sweet girl had yet again offered to accompany her, but like every other time, she had declined with a smile, and the younger woman had understood that despite the heavy weight of all the years and the fragility of her aged body and health, the old woman would make the trip alone. Like every other time she would walk alone to her destination, and like every other time she would stay and cherish each moment she spent there.

For there, she was never alone.

A cool breeze brushed her wrinkled yet once so beautiful face, and she raised a frail hand to arrange a strand of grey hair back in place under the velvet red hat that she had chosen to wear on that cool morning.

She stopped her step as she reached the top of the hill. She had to admit, it was getting harder and harder to walk without the support of an offered strong arm. And she knew that soon, she would not be able to come here alone anymore.

But this trip wasn’t any trip… Because today wasn’t any day.

And that’s why she had to go to her all on her own.

She walked along the alleys that she knew so well, silently greeting the souls that rested under the trees. Those souls, amongst which most had gone through the worst, like she had. But, as she looked upon the numerous names adorning the graves, she inwardly wished that they had also known the best…

    … Like they both had.

That last thought filled her mind just as she reached her intended and cherished destination. Her eyes immediately found the name that would never be engraved in stone more deeply than it was in her heart, and the smile that suddenly lit her face was so bright that it could have awoken every resting soul that surrounded her.
