The call to her arms, Chapter 1

The older woman smiled at him and filled the glass, before shifting her eyes toward his mother.

“Did you say the name of the person she is supposed to meet is Leon?”

The woman took her eyes away from her son and looked at her.

“Yes… That’s what we were told… Why, do you know him?”

The dark-haired woman didn’t answer right away. No, she didn’t know the name. And that was the problem…

In the last few weeks, the various groups of the network had started working together, and even if pseudonyms often changed, the info circulated efficiently enough that the name should have at least sounded familiar to her. But it didn’t. And that’s what concerned her.

She looked at the boy again. She had found them earlier inside the courtyard of the club, hidden behind the gate that led to the terrace. She was just opening the stores when she had heard a small sound, followed by a quick shush and a barely audible whisper. She would never forget the look of horror on the woman’s face when she had discovered them.

She had known right away. The suitcases, the exhausted faces, the fear in their eyes… With a comforting voice, and carefully choosing her words, she had finally been able to reassure them, and had hushed them inside before any unexpected and ill-intentioned visitors could show up.

Their story started like so many others. A village somewhere in France… On their way back from visiting some friends one afternoon, she, her 4-year old son, and her sister in law had watched helplessly as her husband and her in-laws had been taken away by the Germans. She had wanted to run towards her husband, but her sister in law had caught her just in time and forced them to hide, holding mother and son tightly against her heart while they cried.

Then, it was always the same story. With the help of a few friends, they had been able to hide for a while, until they had heard of some evasion line that could take them to Great Britain. They had barely managed to gather the requested money and were told to get to Paris and contact that “Leon”. They had arrived in the Capital the day before and her sister in law had left them in the morning to go to the meeting. They had agreed to meet back here afterwards.
