a lesson learned- a christmas story
I looked up into her eyes and saw the sincerity.
“I love you, Bette Porter,” I whispered.
“I love you, Tina Kennard- Porter,” she said with conviction.
*****
“We’re home,” my father shouted into the foyer.
“Grandpa?”
“Put those right there, cherub,” he instructed Evan about the bags.
I smiled at the nickname had began to call her.
“Well, it’s about time you came inside,” my mother said walking to us.
“Mom,” I said hugging her.
“It’s so good to see you, Christina. I was wondering if you and your guest were planning on eating lunch in the car,” she smiled pulling away from our embrace.
Once again, Evan stood by Bette almost hiding behind her leg.
“Mom, I want you to meet Elizabeth Porter… my wife,” I dropped in the introduction at the last second.
“Wife?” my mother asked smiling.
“Yes, Mom, my wife. We’re life partners,” I affirmed.
“Nice to meet you Elizabeth,” my mother said shaking Bette’s hand.
The fake smile was already plastered on her face.
“And who is this little darling?” she asked with eyes darting back and forth between Bette and Evan.
“My daughter, Evan,” Bette introduced pulling the little girl from behind her.
“Our daughter,” I corrected, “Evan-Marie Porter-Kennard.”
I stood beside Bette taking her hand and placing my other hand on Evan’s shoulder.
“Say hello, munchkin.”
“Hel…Hello,” staggered out of her mouth.
“Hello, darling. No need to be scared of me. I don’t bite.”
Evan looked up at me again. I wanted to give the same reassurance I did with my father but I just didn’t know how my mother would react to my new family. At the moment… she had on her ‘company face’. I had no way of knowing what was going through her mind.
“Go ahead,”I finally said to Evan.
“Nice to meet you, Ma’am,”Evan said holding her hand out, just like Bette had taught her.
“Nice to meet you, too,” my mother said gently taking Evan’s hand, “Such a respectful child,” she marveled.
“It smells wonderful in here, Josie.”
Once again, my father broke the growing tension.
“Yes, well, I’m sure everyone is hungry. Why don’t you girls follow me into the kitchen and we’ll have lunch.”
My mother turned around and we all followed her.
