a lesson learned- a christmas story

“You don’t know if she won’t love us. You said yourself the Porter charm always work.”

“Yeah, but it’s never taken this long,” I smiled.

“This it true,” she smiled back.

“I just don’t want her to ruin Christmas for Evan, ya know?”

    “I know, Tee, I know.”

Another hug. I felt her arms gather me tighter as her sighed against my neck. And then her lips.

    “Babe, we can’t.”

“I know, we can’t have ***** in your parents house.”

“I never said that,” I ran my hands up and down her back, “but not with Evan still awake and in the same house,” I finished.

    She laughed.

“And don’t think you’re off the hook for earlier About there being no Santa Clause.”

“Why should I have lied to her?”

    And so the discussion began.

“Why take away her childhood so early?” I countered.

“There is no Santa Clause, Tee,” she stated.

“I know it’s a fantasy, Bette. But it’s a fantasy she should be able to believe in as long as she can. I want her to stay a little girl for as long as she can, babe, and that means believing in all things that make a childhood great. Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy,” I rattled off.

“Okay, okay. I see your point,” she relinquished.

“I knew you would,” I smiled.

“Especially if I want to get any tonight,” Bette laughed.

I overheard my mother and father talking as I walked down the hall to my old room. I stopped to listen.

“Did you know about this, Eaton?”

“I met Elizabeth today just like you did, Josie.”

“I never imagined my daughter being…”

    “A *****,” my father finished.

    “That’s such an ugly word.”

    Silence.

“I can’t change the way you think, Josie, god knows I’ve tried that for thirty years, but you will not say anything negative around that little girl. I adore her and I want her to have a nice holiday with us. I all of them to have a nice holiday with us. So hold your comments ’til they’re gone back home.”

“I will not be told what not to say in my own house.”

“This is also my house, Josephine. And I will not break a little girl’s heart during the Christmas holiday. Understood?” my father said forcefully.
