a lesson learned- a christmas story
“What did you three do? I’ve never seen her this knocked out.”
“We… had an adventure,” I smiled.
*****
“Five more minutes, please, Mom. Five more minutes,” I moaned as a hand shook me awake.
“C’mon, Mom… it’s Christmas morning.”
“Evan?” I asked peeking out from under my arm.
“Mom, we have to see what Santa left me,” she whined.
I smiled.
“Wipe that smile off your face,” her voice in.
She laid on top of me, pulling my arm off my face.
“Do you have to gloat when you win?” she asked.
“No, not always. But I think I should this time,” I smiled wider.
“Well, get your smiling ***** up so we can go downstairs to open the presents. Your Mom and Dad are waiting.”
“God, what time is it?” I asked stretching.
“It’s a five past eight.”
“Why do I feel like I haven’t slept a wink?”
“I don’t know why you feel that way. You slept all over the bed and me last night.”
“Really? I’m sorry, babe. Did you get any sleep?”
“Yeah. I’m fine. We won’t be alive in a minute if you don’t hurry,” Bette nudged her head toward Evan who stood with her arms across her chest.
“I’m up. I’m up.”
*****
Thirty minutes and a mountain of wrapping paper later, I sat on the floor with Bette’s legs wrapped around me. I leaned back into her chest, while she held me losing the battle with sleep.
“Mom, wake up. Look what Santa got me,” Evan held up the ugliest doll I’ve ever seen.
“Wow, she’s pretty.”
“Liar,” Bette whispered in my ear.
I laughed.
“Who’s up for pancakes?” my mother asked standing up grabbing the paper.
“Mom, I got that,” I said sitting up.
“No, you stay. Enjoy you’re family,” she smiled.
I smiled back.
“Eaton, help me with breakfast.”
“But Grandma, Grandpa was about to tell me the story of when he saw Santa Clause.”
“It’ll keep to after breakfast,” she said walking away.
“After breakfast, cherub, I promise,” he winked.
He was almost out of the room when he turned around.
“Chrissy,” he said looking up.
I followed his eyes. Above us was a branch of mistletoe. Bette gave him the thumbs up sign.
“Why do I think this wasn’t apart of my mother decorating and you two had something to do with this?” I questioned leaning against Bette’s shoulder.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she smiled.
She dipped her head forward and kissed my lips softly.
“Merry Christmas, Elizabeth Porter,” I smiled.
“Merry Christmas, Christina Kennard-Porter,” she returned.
Happy Holidays
