a lesson learned- a christmas story
“Babe, are you ready yet?” I called to the back room knowing that Bette was stalling our departure.
We were headed home to my parents’ house for the Christmas weekend. Our first Christmas together as a family. I hadn’t told my parents’ about Bette… or Evan. I just told them that I was bringing someone special home. And as they prodded me for information, I remained elusive about my girls.
“Christina, honey, why not just tell us who you’re bringing?”
“I can’t Mom.”
“Can’t?” my father asked.
“Well I can but I’m won’t. I want it to be a surprise.”
‘And a surprise it will be,’ I thought to myself, ‘If they weren’t able to accept Bette and Evan in my life, then they wouldn’t be welcome in my thoughts again.’
“Bette, c’mon. We have to get going or we’ll miss our flight,” I yelled over my shoulder as I continue to make a list of things for Shane to check on.
I choose Shane to look after the house,1. I thought her to be the most reliable, and 2.she needed a reprieve from her three roommates.
“Would that really be so bad?”
I turned around at the sound of her voice and found Bette leaning against the archway to the front room.
“Yes, it would be that bad,” I smiled.
I stood from the small table in front of the couch and closed the distance between us.
“I want them to meet you,” I said wrapping my arms around her waist, “and Evan. The two,”kiss on the lips, “most important,” kiss, “people in the life,” I kissed again more passionately.
“Mmmm, Tee,” Bette broke away, ” why can’t we stay here and celebrate the holidays with the girls?”
“Nothing is saying that we can’t, but I want to go home and introduce my family to my beautiful wife,” I nibbled on her neck.
“But Tee, you haven’t told them about me… about the fact that I’m a girl.”
I pulled back.
“A girl? You’re all woman, babe,” I purred reaching for her lips again.
“Tina.”
The tone of her voice told me that she was being serious.
“Bette, if they’re like me, which I know that they are, then you being a woman won’t matter. As long as you love me and I love you, they’ll be happy.”
