a lesson learned- a christmas story
“That’s not true. My father has seen him.”
“Grandpa,” she said with a sense of wow on her face.
“Yes,” I smiled, “Grandpa saw Santa when he was a little boy. But I won’t tell you the story.”
“Please, please tell me the story,” Evan begged.
“I don’t want leave out any details. I’ll let him tell you the story.”
“If Grandpa saw Santa when he was a little boy, then how old is Santa?” she asked me.
“Very old. Like a thousand years old or something like that.”
“Really?”
“Really,” I positively stated.
“Wow.”
As Evan began to stare off into space, I looked up at Bette.
“We… are going to talk later,” I instructed.
Back were the big eyes and a nervous look on her face.
*****
We departed the plane hand in hand with Evan in between. Bette obviously using our daughter as a shield. I let her slide then, thinking of when I could corner her with our talk. My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of someone bellowing my name.
“CHRISSY!”
My eyes followed the sound and finally landed on a Ted Danson look-a-like. My father, but an inch or two shorter. Oh yeah… and less gray hair.
“Daddy,” I replied letting go of Evan’s hand and running into my father’s outstretched arms.
It had been a almost a year and a half since I seen him last. And his hugs still felt the same… bone crushing.
“Daddy, I can’t breathe.”
“Oh how I missed those words,” he laughed.
Stepping back an inch, we gazed at each other remembering the last time I visited home.
“Look at my girl,” he sighed.
“Still as handsome as ever,” I countered.
“Yes, you are.”
“I meant you, Daddy,” I laughed slapping him on the arm.
“I suppose you did,” he chuckled.
He looked over my head at Bette and Evan waiting patiently on the side.
“Is this the friend you said was tagging along?” he asked smiling at my girls.
“Daddy, I want you to meet Elizabeth Porter and her daughter…our daughter Evan-Marie Porter-Kennard.”
“Porter-Kennard,” he repeated.
“Hello, Mr. Kennard,” Bette greeted holding out her hand.
“Elizabeth, please call me Eaton,” he smiled.
As my father shook Bette’s hand, he noticed Evan grab onto mine.
