a lesson learned- a christmas story

“And this beautiful cherub must be Evan.”

He knelt down on one knee coming eye to eye with Evan. She looked up at me for assurance.

    I whispered, “It’s okay.”

“Are you my new grandpa?” she asked.

“Uh,” he looked up at me, I nodded my head, “yeah. Yes, I’m you’re new grandpa.”

“Can I call you Grandpa?” Evan asked another question.

“I only save my best hugs for my best girl,” he smiled opening his arms.

Without hesitation, Evan flew into them wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Uh, Evan, cherub, I can’t breathe,” he choked.

    I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Well, here we are,” Daddy announced turning the car off.

I stared out the window at my childhood home.

    “Daddy, new paint job?”

“Yeah, after your mother begged me for all summer to put a new color on the old house, I got Ringo to help me slap on a new coat.”

    “Ringo Patterson?”

“Yeah, he’s still around. And with a promise of beer and couple of sandwiches, he was happy to help.”

I continued to stare at the new sky blue paint wishing that the house remained it’s puky peppermint green from my childhood.

“Staring at it will not bring the front door any closer,” my father broke the silence.

    “Yeah right,” I laughed.

I looked at Bette in the backseat next to Evan. Without words, she knew what was going through my head.

“Uh, Evan, why don’t you help Eaton with the bags to the front door,” Bette suggested.

“His name is Grandpa,” Evan smiled.

“Help Grandpa with the bags,” Bette corrected herself.

I waited while they cleared the trunk before moving into the back seat next to Bette.

    “Nervous?” she asked.

“More like scared shitless,” I laughed.

    She smiled.

“Don’t be. If they love you… then they’ll love me, right?”

“My father already likes you, Bette. I can tell. It’s my mother that I’m worried about.”

“Well if she’s anything like her intelligent, breathtakingly gorgeous daughter, then she’ll love me,” she stated taking my hand.

I lowered my head and stared at our joined hands. I loved her hands so much. They made me feel so secure.

“I’ll protect you, you know that. With my all being.”
