“Grandpa, what’s that?” Evan asked pointing at a white vegetable on her plate.

The name Grandpa hadn’t gone unnoticed by my mother. I watched her eyes widen and look across the table at my father.

    “That, cherub, is cauliflower.”

    “Cauliflower?”

“It’s like broccoli, sweetie,” Bette answered.

“I don’t like broccoli,” Evan whined.

    “Try it.”

“I don’t like…” she started but stopped when I glared at her.

“Evan, just taste it. It looks like broccoli but doesn’t taste like broccoli,” I explained.

Her face was still scrunched up.

“She doesn’t have to eat it,” my father spoke up.

“She has to try it,” I countered.

Evan stabbed the vegetable with her folk and slowly brought the cauliflower stalk to her mouth. She hesitated when she saw my father dip his own stalk into a small side bowl of melted butter. He pushed the bowl closer to her and she dipped. Together they popped the vegetable into their mouths.

    “Mmmm,” he moaned.

    “Mmmm,” she copied.

“Didn’t that taste good?” he asked.

    “Yes,” she answered.

    “Want to try another?”

    She nodded her head excitedly.

The rest at the table watched as my father and Evan polished off their portion on cauliflower.

We were shown our rooms and left to unpack.

“Baby, why don’t you go take out your pyjamas for tonight? So that why I don’t have to hunt for them later,” Bette told Evan.

    “Okay.”

We watched Evan hop off our bed and out of the room. She was in my old room.

“Are you okay with this?” Bette asked.

“Yeah,” I answered placing our sweaters in the draw, “No,” I slammed it shut.

    “Well which is it?”

    I remained facing the bureau.

    “Tina?”

    I turned around.

“Their my parents and I love them…”

    “But?”

“I know what is going through my mother mind. Probably what she’s saying right now to my father since we’re in here,” I huffed, “You can practically read it on her face.”

    “Tee, you did surprise them.”

    “You’re defending her?” I asked.

“I can’t help but to defend her, Tee. You kind of sprung me and Evan on them without notice. It takes time for them to absorb us.”

“But why? Why should it take time? It’s obvious that I love you and Evan. Why can’t they?”
