a lesson learned- a christmas story

She stared at me with big innocent eyes trying to believe my words. Problem was… I didn’t really believe them either.

“Okay,” she nodded then lowered her eyes.

“What?” I asked raising her chin.

    “What if…”

    “What if what?”

“What if they don’t like me?”

“Like you?,” I chuckled, “who ever has been able to resist the Porter charm?” I smiled.

That earned me her trademark smile. 1000 watts.

“And that little girl out front… she has it down pact. Almost better than you,” I returned her smile.

“She is going be better than me, ya know…”

“A heartbreaker. Just like her momma.”

    “Like both of her mothers.”

She pulled me in for another kiss.

“Ready?” I asked when we parted.

    “As I’ll ever be.”

“When we get home, your new grandma and me, we’ll take you Christmas shopping,” I said to Evan on the plane.

    “But isn’t it to late?”

    “It’s never to late, baby.”

    “Mommy said never to procrastinate.”

“Wow, that’s a big word,” I laughed looking over her head at Bette.

Without meeting my eyes, Bette smiled and continued to read her magazine.

“It was my word of the day last week,” Evan pronounced.

    “Ahhh,” I acknowledged.

Evan’s word of the day. Each morning her and Bette would look in the dictionary and chose a word. And that word would be Evan’s word of the day to be use as often as possible, of course in the right situation.

“Well, it is sort like procrastinating but you find the best gifts two days before Christmas.”

    “Really?” her eyes popped.

“Yeah, sure…. I already know that’s how Santa does all of his shopping,” I stated pulling her further in.

“Santa? There’s no such thing as Santa,” she huffed.

    Or so I thought.

“What do you mean there’s no Santa?”

“Mommy told me that Santa doesn’t exist.”

“She did, did she?” I glared at Bette.

How could she disenchant Evan this way?

    “Well, your Mommy is wrong.”

    “Huh?”

    Bette finally looked at me.

“Your Mommy is wrong,” I repeated.

    “But…” was Evan’s argument.

“Santa is very much real. He’s real to me.”

    “But…”

“Do you think I’m… crazy for believing in Santa?”

    A moment passed.

“No. But how is he real? No one has ever seen him.”
