The call to her arms, Chapter 1

She walked up to the stone and brushed her fingers over the beautiful name, whispering it at the same time. Then her eyes rested on the dates underneath it and she let out a long sigh, as the pain and sadness filled her whole being, forming the first tears in her eyes.

She slowly walked back to the front of the grave, and with great difficulty yet strong determination she bent down and placed the beautiful bouquet of flowers, that she had preciously carried along, on the cold stone. Then her eyes returned to the name that, up to this day, had never failed to increase the beating of her heart whenever she pronounced it, and she smiled.

    “Happy anniversary, my love.”

With tears now fully covering her cheeks, she walked the few steps that took her to the small wooden bench facing the grave, and slowly sat down. Taking out a handkerchief and trying in vain to wipe the tears that kept being replaced by new ones, she stayed there, watching the beautiful stone that held the most precious being that had ever come into her life. A being that she had loved, and still did, with unbridled abandon and passion. A love that even the worst enemy had never been able to break. A love that was born on that same day… So many years ago.

    No, today wasn’t any day.

As she let the handkerchief rest on her knee, finally giving up on trying drying her tears, she looked up at the precious engraved letters again, and she smiled.

    So many years ago…

And yet that day was still so vivid in her mind…

The dark-skinned woman watched in amusement as the little boy downed in a few gulps the glass of milk she had just placed in front of him.

“Would you like another one, sweetheart?” she asked him once he had put the glass back down on the table, wiping his upper lip with the back of his hand.

The fair-haired boy looked quizzically at the young woman sitting closely on his right side, and when she gave him a smile and a small nod, he shyly pushed the glass across the table.
