    Survival: Chapter 4

“Dana, you’re an idiot,” Shane cajoled gently.  “You know Alice would be the first person to want to be there with you.  Besides me, of course,” she added with a pointed look.

“Actually, I was hoping you would come with me,” Dana said hopefully.  “I don’t want to go alone.”

“Of course I’ll come with you,” Shane replied, squeezing Dana’s hand firmly.  “But, don’t you think you should ask Alice to come, too?  I’m sure she would want to be there.”

“No, I don’t think now is the best time to ask her any favours,” Dana replied, shaking her head firmly.

“Alice wouldn’t see that as a ‘favour,’ Dana,” Shane said.

“I know,” Dana agreed.  “I just don’t want to worry her until I know what Dr. Bauer says, ok?”

Shane frowned.  She knew that Dana’s attempt to shelter Alice from her illness wouldn’t play out well, but she couldn’t very well force her to talk to Alice.

Shaking her head slightly, she finally relented.  “Ok, Dana.  We’ll do it your way for now.  But, you’ve got to promise me that you will talk to Alice about all this shit between you soon, alright?  Otherwise, I’m going to have to strap you both to chairs and lock you in a room together to get everything sorted out.  Because this is starting to drive me crazy.”

“You and me both, Yoda” Dana responded with a sympathetic grin.

    Two days later.

“Fucking Lara,” Alice muttered, staring up at her living room ceiling as she lay on her couch.  She had just returned home from a horrible day at work; things had been hectic at the station, and Ruth had spent much of the afternoon criticising Alice’s recent commentaries on The Chart.  The only good thing about listening to Ruth’s tirades was that it didn’t give Alice any time to obsess over her argument with Dana at The Planet the other day.

But, as soon as she walked in her apartment, her mind had been flooded with the questions that had preoccupied her ever since she had found out that Lara had called Dana a couple days ago: Why was Lara coming back to L.A.?  Was she still in love with Dana?  And, most importantly, despite Dana’s promises to the contrary, was the feeling mutual?  Would things go right back to the way they were when Lara came back into Dana’s life a few months earlier?

    1. I don’t know how I managed to miss the last couple of updates to this, but I apologize for it and I’m glad you posted this because it made me curious enough to go back and read the entire story again…and what can I say that will possibly do justice to your writing? I don’t think there could be anything good enough. I absolutely adore this story and the direction you’re taking it, and I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s truly addictive, and I mean that in only the best way. Superb job, and you make me more and more jealous with every post you make.

    2. This was a good ending to a long day! I absolutely love the depth you’re giving Dana and Alice…and Shane–you’ve nailed them perfectly! You also nailed the problem with microwavable popcorn nicely too- I could practically smell that awful charred scent! As always, well done, and you’ve left me eagerly awaiting your next chapter! (And did I detect from your comment to Min that Lara might just have a love interest too??)

    3. Yay for your update! I really like how you place Shane in the midst of how Alice and Dana connect to communicate. She is indeed wise. And your unfolding of Alice and Dana’s deep bond of friendship is really delicious and thoughtful, via gentle words and gestures. Potential-rama! And of course I’m curious to see where you take our gal Lara, relative to how her inclusion moves the tale along. Please post soon, I’m such a fan-looking forward to the next installment;)

    4. i’m glad they talked. of course i’d love to see them get back together but it’s better if they solve their issues first, at least as friends. i was kinda worried with the chemo but i hope the cancer won’t come back.thanks for the update :] i liked how shane helped them in order to talk.
