    Survival: Chapter 4

Dana sat quietly for a few moments, turning her mug of tea slowly on the table in front of her.  She knew that Shane was making sense, but she couldn’t figure out how to make things right with Alice again.  And, she wasn’t sure she could handle having another difficult conversation like the one they had just had outside The Planet.

“Dana, I think you need to figure out what’s happening between you guys sooner rather than later,” Shane continued, interrupting Dana’s reverie.  “Otherwise, you’re just going to keep having these awkward conversations in front of all your friends.”

“But, what can I do now?” Dana asked helplessly.  “I’ve fucked things up pretty royally today.”

Shane shook her head.  “You know Alice; she’s got a quick temper, but she’ll come around.  Give her some time to cool down, and then talk to her about Lara.  Explain what’s going on.”

“Yeah, well, I think I’ll wait for a little while to broach that subject again,” Dana replied, sighing heavily.  “Besides, I’ve got other things to deal with right now, like my appointment with Dr. Bauer tomorrow.”

“Is Alice coming with you?” Shane asked.

Dana paused guiltily.  “Alice doesn’t know about it,” she finally replied.

“Why not?” Shane asked, startled by the idea that Dana would keep anything about her illness from Alice.

“Because,” Dana started to answer, but she stopped as she realised there was no easy response to Shane’s question.  Dr. Bauer had called yesterday to make the appointment, and Dana hadn’t found an opportunity to bring it up with Alice.  But, she hadn’t looked for the opportunity, either.  Like Lara’s return to L.A., Dana had felt that her illness was yet another issue that was popping up just in time to interfere with her burgeoning relationship with Alice.  So, rather than telling Alice that she was meeting with her oncologist again, she had pushed it out of her mind so that they could enjoy their evening together.

Dana sighed, and looked at Shane.  “I guess I didn’t want to worry her anymore than she already is,” she said.  “I don’t know what Dr. Bauer is going to tell me, and I don’t want Alice to have to deal with anymore bad news about my health.”

    1. I don’t know how I managed to miss the last couple of updates to this, but I apologize for it and I’m glad you posted this because it made me curious enough to go back and read the entire story again…and what can I say that will possibly do justice to your writing? I don’t think there could be anything good enough. I absolutely adore this story and the direction you’re taking it, and I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s truly addictive, and I mean that in only the best way. Superb job, and you make me more and more jealous with every post you make.

    2. This was a good ending to a long day! I absolutely love the depth you’re giving Dana and Alice…and Shane–you’ve nailed them perfectly! You also nailed the problem with microwavable popcorn nicely too- I could practically smell that awful charred scent! As always, well done, and you’ve left me eagerly awaiting your next chapter! (And did I detect from your comment to Min that Lara might just have a love interest too??)

    3. Yay for your update! I really like how you place Shane in the midst of how Alice and Dana connect to communicate. She is indeed wise. And your unfolding of Alice and Dana’s deep bond of friendship is really delicious and thoughtful, via gentle words and gestures. Potential-rama! And of course I’m curious to see where you take our gal Lara, relative to how her inclusion moves the tale along. Please post soon, I’m such a fan-looking forward to the next installment;)

    4. i’m glad they talked. of course i’d love to see them get back together but it’s better if they solve their issues first, at least as friends. i was kinda worried with the chemo but i hope the cancer won’t come back.thanks for the update :] i liked how shane helped them in order to talk.
