    Survival: Chapter 4

“Why?  What are you both waiting for?” Shane asked, trying to keep her voice as non-judgemental as possible, but failing miserably.  Sometimes the stubbornness of her two best friends was mind-boggling to her.

“Look, things between us have only just started to get back to normal,” Dana said, trying to explain the situation to herself as much as to Shane.  “And, there are a lot of things that we haven’t discussed yet that we would have to talk about if we tried to have a relationship again.”

    “Like what?” Shane asked.

“Like, we haven’t talked about what happened after Lara and I got back together, when Alice was on all those pills,” Dana explained, feeling a familiar mix of guilt, anger, and sadness as she thought back to that time.  She had never seen Alice as depressed as she was after they had broken up, and it had gutted her to know that she was the cause of Alice’s pain.  But, although she had deeply missed Alice’s friendship, she had also resented the constant barrage of snide remarks that Alice had directed toward her and Lara, both on the radio and in front of their friends.  It had gotten so uncomfortable that she had often wondered whether they would ever be able to be friends again.

“She chased me in her car, for Christ’s sake,” Dana said, before shaking her head to rid her mind of those bad memories.  “There are a lot of things that we’ve avoided talking about since we’ve become friends again, and I just don’t want to open up all those old issues.”

“So, you’re not going to try to work things out with Alice because you don’t want to have an uncomfortable conversation?” Shane asked sarcastically.  “That’s fucked up, Dana.”

“Well, Alice was the one who said she didn’t want to get involved right now,” Dana explained with a note of exasperation.  “And, even without all those other complications, I don’t want her to have to deal with all this cancer bullshit while we’re in a relationship.  I’ve put her through enough already.”

“I think Alice has already signed on for all that,” Shane replied firmly.  “Whether she’s your friend or your girlfriend, she’s going to be there for you.  She loves you, Dana.”

    1. I don’t know how I managed to miss the last couple of updates to this, but I apologize for it and I’m glad you posted this because it made me curious enough to go back and read the entire story again…and what can I say that will possibly do justice to your writing? I don’t think there could be anything good enough. I absolutely adore this story and the direction you’re taking it, and I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s truly addictive, and I mean that in only the best way. Superb job, and you make me more and more jealous with every post you make.

    2. This was a good ending to a long day! I absolutely love the depth you’re giving Dana and Alice…and Shane–you’ve nailed them perfectly! You also nailed the problem with microwavable popcorn nicely too- I could practically smell that awful charred scent! As always, well done, and you’ve left me eagerly awaiting your next chapter! (And did I detect from your comment to Min that Lara might just have a love interest too??)

    3. Yay for your update! I really like how you place Shane in the midst of how Alice and Dana connect to communicate. She is indeed wise. And your unfolding of Alice and Dana’s deep bond of friendship is really delicious and thoughtful, via gentle words and gestures. Potential-rama! And of course I’m curious to see where you take our gal Lara, relative to how her inclusion moves the tale along. Please post soon, I’m such a fan-looking forward to the next installment;)

    4. i’m glad they talked. of course i’d love to see them get back together but it’s better if they solve their issues first, at least as friends. i was kinda worried with the chemo but i hope the cancer won’t come back.thanks for the update :] i liked how shane helped them in order to talk.
