    Survival: Chapter 4

“Fuck, Dana, what was that all about?” Shane asked as her friend sat heavily in the chair beside her.  Although the rest of the gang had scattered after Dana had run outside The Planet to talk to Alice, Shane had stayed behind, knowing that after the mini-explosion of words that had followed the announcement that Lara was coming back to L.A., Dana would need a friend to talk to when she came back.

“I have no idea,” Dana replied, slouching sulkily in her seat.

“Come on, Dane,” Shane said, giving her friend a knowing look.  “As soon as Lara’s name comes up in the conversation, Alice is out of here like a shot and you’re following her.  I think we all know what that was all about.”

“Well, what was I supposed to say?” Dana asked, letting her pent-up frustrations about what had happened bubble over.  “I mean, Lara called me; I didn’t call her.  And, she has a right to move wherever she wants.  I can’t very well stop her from coming back to L.A.  And, you know what?  I don’t really want to.”

“What do you mean?” Shane asked, feeling startled and slightly anxious at Dana’s declaration.  “Are you still in love with Lara?”

“No,” Dana replied emphatically.  “It’s not like that.  But, it would be nice to be friends, you know?  She’s important to me.”

“Yeah, I know,” Shane responded, as she took the wooden mixing stick out of her coffee and chewed it with a thoughtful expression.  “But, you have to look at this from Alice’s perspective, Dana.  She went through hell the last time you and Lara hooked up.  I think she’s just worried about that happening again.”

“I know,” Dana agreed quietly.  “But, I told her I don’t want to be with Lara.  That’s over now.  I’ve moved on.”

“To who?  Alice?” Shane asked, giving her friend a quizzical look.

Dana hesitated for a moment as she considered the question.  “No,” she finally replied, though her tone was unconvincing.  “Nothing is happening between us.”

“Come on, Dana,” Shane said knowingly.  “Something is definitely going on between you two.  Anyone can see that.”

“Well, we did kiss last night,” Dana said, her face brightening slightly as her mind briefly revelled in the memory of the touch of Alice’s lips against her own.  “But,” she added, her face falling again, “we agreed that it was a bad idea to start things up again right now.”

    1. I don’t know how I managed to miss the last couple of updates to this, but I apologize for it and I’m glad you posted this because it made me curious enough to go back and read the entire story again…and what can I say that will possibly do justice to your writing? I don’t think there could be anything good enough. I absolutely adore this story and the direction you’re taking it, and I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s truly addictive, and I mean that in only the best way. Superb job, and you make me more and more jealous with every post you make.

    2. This was a good ending to a long day! I absolutely love the depth you’re giving Dana and Alice…and Shane–you’ve nailed them perfectly! You also nailed the problem with microwavable popcorn nicely too- I could practically smell that awful charred scent! As always, well done, and you’ve left me eagerly awaiting your next chapter! (And did I detect from your comment to Min that Lara might just have a love interest too??)

    3. Yay for your update! I really like how you place Shane in the midst of how Alice and Dana connect to communicate. She is indeed wise. And your unfolding of Alice and Dana’s deep bond of friendship is really delicious and thoughtful, via gentle words and gestures. Potential-rama! And of course I’m curious to see where you take our gal Lara, relative to how her inclusion moves the tale along. Please post soon, I’m such a fan-looking forward to the next installment;)

    4. i’m glad they talked. of course i’d love to see them get back together but it’s better if they solve their issues first, at least as friends. i was kinda worried with the chemo but i hope the cancer won’t come back.thanks for the update :] i liked how shane helped them in order to talk.
