    Survival: Chapter 4

“What’s up?” Alice asked, noting Shane’s unusually dark demeanour.  “Had a fight with Carmen or something?”

“No,” Shane responded, then sat quietly, apparently considering how to say whatever she had come to say.

Alice was used to Shane’s reluctance to dive straight into heavy issues, so she gave her a few moments to get her thoughts together.  But, her patience soon wore thin as she began to suspect that Shane actually wasn’t going to say anything.  “Well?” she asked pointedly.

Shane sighed, and leaned forward.  “When was the last time you saw Dana?” she asked.

“Oh god, what is it?” Alice asked, feeling a creeping sense of dread.  “Is something wrong?”

“No, Dana’s at home; she’s ok,” Shane replied apologetically, as she realised how what she had said must have sounded to Alice.  “I just wondered if you guys have had a chance to talk lately.”

“Well, I went over there last night to drop off some groceries and to make sure she had everything she needed,” Alice replied, feeling a wave of relief pass over at the confirmation that Dana was ok.  “But, I didn’t stay long.  We haven’t really talked much since the whole Lara thing at The Planet the other day.”  Alice laughed humourlessly as she relived their conversation in her mind’s eye for what felt like the thousandth time.

“Yeah, I figured,” Shane said, before relapsing into silence.

“Shane,” Alice said, her patience reaching its limit.  “What is it?  You’ve obviously got something on your mind.”

“Ok, look, I didn’t want to butt in between you guys, but I think you need to know something, and I’m getting the impression that Dana doesn’t want to tell you about it,” Shane explained in an exasperated tone.

“What doesn’t she want to tell me?” Alice asked anxiously.

“Dana had an appointment with Dr. Bauer yesterday,” Shane said, looking at Alice expectantly.

“She never mentioned it,” Alice said, her voice full of quiet surprise.

“I know,” Shane replied.  “She didn’t want you to know because she was afraid it would worry you.  So, I went with her.”

“Well, what did he say?” Alice asked.

“He said that Dana needs to go back on the chemotherapy as soon as possible,” Shane replied, her voice breaking a little as the reality of the words she was speaking hit her.  “He said that despite the infection, she needs to have basically the same treatment all over again in order to get rid of the cancer.  He wants to make sure she’s completely over the infection first, but he thinks she’ll be able to start with another round of chemo next week.”

    1. I don’t know how I managed to miss the last couple of updates to this, but I apologize for it and I’m glad you posted this because it made me curious enough to go back and read the entire story again…and what can I say that will possibly do justice to your writing? I don’t think there could be anything good enough. I absolutely adore this story and the direction you’re taking it, and I can’t wait to see what happens. It’s truly addictive, and I mean that in only the best way. Superb job, and you make me more and more jealous with every post you make.

    2. This was a good ending to a long day! I absolutely love the depth you’re giving Dana and Alice…and Shane–you’ve nailed them perfectly! You also nailed the problem with microwavable popcorn nicely too- I could practically smell that awful charred scent! As always, well done, and you’ve left me eagerly awaiting your next chapter! (And did I detect from your comment to Min that Lara might just have a love interest too??)

    3. Yay for your update! I really like how you place Shane in the midst of how Alice and Dana connect to communicate. She is indeed wise. And your unfolding of Alice and Dana’s deep bond of friendship is really delicious and thoughtful, via gentle words and gestures. Potential-rama! And of course I’m curious to see where you take our gal Lara, relative to how her inclusion moves the tale along. Please post soon, I’m such a fan-looking forward to the next installment;)

    4. i’m glad they talked. of course i’d love to see them get back together but it’s better if they solve their issues first, at least as friends. i was kinda worried with the chemo but i hope the cancer won’t come back.thanks for the update :] i liked how shane helped them in order to talk.
