Life Happens: All Over the Map

Catherine and Bette wandered in soon after, chatting about some mutual friend of theirs. They sat in the living room after Helena shooed them out of her way in the kitchen and handed them each a glass of wine.

An hour later, Alice arrived with a bottle of wine and a gigantic frown. She had told Helena over the phone about Tasha’s orders to return to Iraq. Helena held her for a long time when she walked through the door.  Alice came to the kitchen and helped Helena finish up with the food she was preparing—a series of appetizers designed to fit together as a meal. Everything was healthy and light, and Helena hoped it would help them all find a better frame of mind.

Alice cut a yellow pepper into smithereens, pontificating on everything from George Bush to Margaret Thatcher (isn’t she dead yet? Helena asked) to her asshole yoga teacher who threatened to kick her out of the class if she didn’t stop making fun of his teaching methods.

“And I’m trashing my car, Helena, I’m buying a bike.”

Helena nodded, thinking seriously about the idea. “That probably won’t stop the war, all on its own, but I support your decision.”

“Yeah, yeah, and I’m…what?” Helena reached over to stop Alice from cutting any further.  “I’m cutting a pepper, Helena, fine, so it’s a yellow pepper paste, stick it in some spaghetti sauce and leave me the fuck alone. I’m helping you cook.” She waved her butcher knife in the air around her head, inspiring Helena to retreat back to her own work. “I’m also going to write to Congress and I’m starting a petition which I’ll promote on The Chart…” She stopped, giving up altogether. Helena reached an arm out for her and she walked over to lean her head on the taller woman’s chest for a few minutes.

Catherine spent much of their dinner trying to win Alice over. She knew what an impression she had made on Helena’s best friend and wanted to make things right, even as she felt her time with Helena running out.

For Catherine, this was a rare occasion—twice in one day, she ate her meals sitting down, surrounded by friends. She was not barking orders into her cell phone, nor yelling at servants, nor dealing with her many business and gambling initiatives.

    1. That was kind of harsh, relegating James to the sub-human. OK, so I like Catherine a little better now, but she still needs to go. (The one on the show is a souless cypher.) It was interesting how she and Bette connected, though. Now why didn’t Helena lock the door and finish what she started after Phyllis split?

    2. I thought this chapter was about both Bette and Helena realizing certain things. Bette is jealous of Helena’s past lovers, and Helena wants to do something with her life, maybe even in the way of art, is that right? They love each other and maybe even though they think they’re not ready, they are whether they like it or not. Office sex never goes well, lol. Too true. I really liked this. Thanks.

    3. wow -you can humanize any naughty girl can’t you – amazing. I still don’t like Catherine but I like how you are having Helena evolve. I’m still amazed you converted me. Amazed but glad to read on…more please.

    4. This chapter covered a lot and was a little confusing at time but the bottom line is that they are caring for each other even if they are not ready to commit to each other.i’m so happy they did not have a three some
