Life Happens: All Over the Map

“Can’t you behold beauty and also change the world?” Bette, caring little about Catherine’s presence, leaned forward and brushed her lips across Helena’s shoulder. She wanted to hear so much more from this woman. She wanted to know all of her.

“Come on Bette, don’t be naïve. You live your life in exactly the way that Helena does. You just have less money than Helena is used to having.” Catherine moved closer to Helena as she spoke to Bette. Now each woman flanked Helena on either side, a mere inch away from her.

“So that’s your answer?” Bette was becoming angry. “Just let all of the shit go by? That’s so…fucked up.”

Helena spoke up then. “Maybe I was wrong, Catherine. Maybe you’re wrong as well. I mean what do you do when you go away on business? Who were those pig farmers you were speaking of, when you returned from Spain? Are you buying up small farms? Are you fucking, Starbucks?”

“Helena, Starbucks does not buy out small farmers.”

“WHATEVER, you know what I mean.”

“No, Helena, I don’t know what you mean. You don’t know what you mean, because your money is so old, so ill-begotten, that you don’t even know what bloody awful secrets hide behind your family’s wealth. You judge me, when I was raised to think of myself…” Catherine had stopped yelling, her voice choked off.

Bette was curious. “You must have experienced some racist shit growing up. Especially among the rich families yours would have spent time with.”

Catherine nodded.  “I did, it’s true.  I’ve had to work very hard to prove myself worthy. It reminds me…” She looked at Helena’s hand which now lay on her shoulder, and ran her fingers over it softly. “Helena, I just want you to think about something, and I’d like to be the person who tells you this: your daughter is going to need things from you that you cannot give to her. And you are going to have to work hard to surround her with people who can give her what she needs.”

“What do you mean?” Helena asked, turning when she heard Bette sigh behind her. “Oh. Right. That.”

    1. That was kind of harsh, relegating James to the sub-human. OK, so I like Catherine a little better now, but she still needs to go. (The one on the show is a souless cypher.) It was interesting how she and Bette connected, though. Now why didn’t Helena lock the door and finish what she started after Phyllis split?

    2. I thought this chapter was about both Bette and Helena realizing certain things. Bette is jealous of Helena’s past lovers, and Helena wants to do something with her life, maybe even in the way of art, is that right? They love each other and maybe even though they think they’re not ready, they are whether they like it or not. Office sex never goes well, lol. Too true. I really liked this. Thanks.

    3. wow -you can humanize any naughty girl can’t you – amazing. I still don’t like Catherine but I like how you are having Helena evolve. I’m still amazed you converted me. Amazed but glad to read on…more please.

    4. This chapter covered a lot and was a little confusing at time but the bottom line is that they are caring for each other even if they are not ready to commit to each other.i’m so happy they did not have a three some
