Just The Girl, Stories: Four Friends, Three Days, Two Brides and One Wedding (Part 2 of 3)

Bette took in Sam’s words in silence.

“You’re supposed to make promises during weddings and glorify people during funerals,” Sam trudged on. “That’s why this thing reads like a eulogy.”

Bette blew out a breath from her lips, her brown eyes looking up at the clear blue sky, looking just like someone whose ego just took a beating. After a while, resignation washed over her features and with weak movements, she snatched back the paper from Sam, her face defeated. “I guess it’s back to the old drawing board, huh?”

“I’d be more than happy to help out – if you still want my help, that is.” Sam smiled encouragingly, draping an arm around Bette’s shoulder and squeezing her arm affectionately.

“Thanks.” Bette mumbled, allowing herself to be pulled into a half hug and take comfort in Sam’s warmth. It didn’t take long for dejection to leave her face when she heard the all-too-familiar yawning of her bestfriend. The sides of her lips curled upwards. “You just took a nap..” She chided Sam. “And you just drank coffee too.”

    “Ice cream makes me sleepy.”

“Everything makes you sleepy.” Bette corrected.

Sam smiled at this before placing her head on Bette’s shoulder. Proving that yawns were contagious, both women yawned at the same time, much to their amusement. “You’re really doing it..” Sam murmured softly. “You’re really getting married.”

“First one in the group. Who’d have thought, huh?”

“Certainly not me.” Sam smiled fondly. “I was betting on Al to walk the aisle first.”

“We tried to make wager on it, remember?” Bette grinned at the memory. Before Tina entered their lives, they had talked about giving the last single person standing in the group 20 million from each of them. They never pushed through with it. Anyone with half a brain would know that Shane would win a wager like that by default.

“If you hadn’t met Tina, would you have ever married?”

Bette took a moment to ponder this. “Nah,” She shook her head. “Probably would’ve stayed single for life.”

“What if your dad pressured you into marrying someone. Who’d you pick?”

“That’s easy.” Bette’s mouth twisted into a charming grin. She didn’t have to think long and hard about that. She pinched Sam’s cheek affectionately. “You.”

Although I was a little sad to see that Part 3 of the wedding road trip never made an update. I would love to see this story continued one day. Thank you for your wonderful writing!
