Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

    Ouch. Blunt, much?

I look down on my lap and fight a sigh. As much as I wanted to take offense with his statement, I found that I could not. He had a point. My Tina was a brilliant girl, she would have gotten stellar grades in that small, relatively unknown public school in our small town. She would have been qualified enough to enter USC without having been educated in the pricey, top-seeded private school that was Redwind Academy. And Porter was right, I put my only child in a school that practically emptied my life savings with its high tuition fees just to ensure that she had a place in Harvard or Yale or any of those elite schools – which was my ultimate dream for her. Having only graduated high school, I wanted something different for my daughter. I wanted her to have a bright future, one that wasn’t confined in the four corners of a farm. I have always believed that if you were to dream, then dream big. So, I wanted the whole package for Tina – and that involved the country’s top schools. Yes, I was ambitious, but it stemmed from a good place – a place full of love and hopes for good things for the only person that I was living for.

Feeling that I had no response for his statement, he spoke up again. “I heard your daughter got accepted in Yale and Princeton?”

“Yes.” I give a small smile. “Columbia too.” I say proudly.

    “But she’s going to USC?”

Does it make me a bad father that my smile faltered a bit when he said that? “Y-yeah, she is. She got accepted into this famous film school. Apparently George Lucas is one of its graduates.” I ripped through that one in a single breath, trying to hide the strain in my voice. I might get stoned for this, but I’m not a fan of Star Wars anyway.

“I see. George Lucas.” He says somewhat stoically. I would bet every single bill in my wallet – all thirty dollars of it – that Melvin Porter has never seen a Star Wars movie in his entire life.

“What Ivy League universities did Bette get accepted in?”
