Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“All of them.” A cocky grin makes an appearance on his face. It’s frightening that I sometimes see that same smile on Bette. Like father, like daughter I guess. “But she ignored all the others and chose Yale – she had her mind and heart set on becoming a Yalie, like me and her mom. Or at least she did.” He mumbles. I can hear the resentment and disappointment in his voice.

“Tina, she uh.. seems really happy and excited about USC. So.. I’m backing her decision up a hundred percent.” I mumble weakly, attempting a smile – which probably resembled a grimace. It’s enough for me to know that she was accepted in those famous universities, I tell myself again and again. Good father, supportive father.. I chant inside my head, trying to fight the taunting voice jeering at me from the back of my mind.

I guess it wasn’t such a far-fetched thing that Porter arches a skeptical eyebrow in my direction. I’m such an unconvincing liar, and I have a non-existent poker face.

Fuck, that eyebrow of his just won’t come down. Fine. “Okay, maybe just ninety nine percent.” I backtrack.

He gives me a knowing smile. Liar! I could practically hear his thoughts.

A while later, he turns serious once more. “I’m worried about Bette,” He confessed as he took in a deep breath. The deep creases on his forehead became more pronounced, and all of a sudden, he looked older than his years. “I.. I don’t have a very strong heart. I know I’m not the indestructible man that I foolishly believed I was during my younger years. Walking around the estate is a struggle in itself, let alone flying all over the world to run my business.” He smiled a sad, bitter smile. I could tell that this was a sensitive matter for him. There was nothing worse for a workaholic than to be told that he or she needed to cut down on work – or stop working entirely. “Who knows what may happen in the next four years? I might be okay now, but if something happens again, I might not even be alive to see my daughter graduate college.” He paused and exhaled audibly. I stay silent, I don’t know how to respond to that. “Bette would.. have to take over the family business earlier than anticipated.” He continued.
