Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)
CHAPTER FIFTY TWO: Here Are Your Options
Heavy footsteps made their way around the tiny apartment. A huge man walked barefoot through the wood, dragging his pajama-clad body from his dark bedroom to the sparsely lit hallway leading to the kitchen. Passing by the living room, he yawned loudly and bent down to grab the remote control from the coffee table. He scratched his belly lazily as he turned on his brand new television set – his first since he moved to California four years ago. He idly flipped through channels until he finally settled on a re-run of last night’s football game. He adjusted the volume and turned it up a notch so he could hear the commentary even if he was outside the living room. Satisfied with his choice of programming, he threw the remote over his shoulder, where it landed perfectly on the sofa with a soft bounce. A cocky grin in place for his excellent aim, he resumed his interrupted journey towards the kitchen, humming a tune the entire way. It was five in the morning, and under normal circumstances, he would’ve have made little or no sound at all to prevent from waking his sleep-loving housemate. But not today. Today, he was free to make noise, after all, he had the whole place to himself.
Which wasn’t supposed to be the case – with today being a weekday.
Of course he knew that he was all alone. He knew that his precious daughter was sleeping somewhere else without his permission. He wasn’t clueless or naïve as that gutsy teenager of his would like to believe. Despite appearances, Kenneth Kennard was a smart, intuitive man. And he knew, from the first few nights when he would wake up to the sound of the old floorboards creaking in the living room, that Tina was sneaking out to crawl in bed with Bette.
Ah Bette, he smiled. He loved that girl like a daughter, adored her even.
And thank God that he only harbored pleasant feelings for the young Porter – since that was the only thing that kept him from pulling out his hunting rifle from under the bed when he would hear his daughter stalking out of their apartment at an ungodly hour to sleep at someone else’s home.

I cannot quit laughing thinking about Shane’s stink finger. I had tears rolling down my cheeks while letting out a nice belly laugh. So freakin’ funny. Good to see Ken and Melvin working together… seems Bette will be a yalie after all.
