Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

I look down on my glass of tea and absentmindedly play with the lemon slice floating on top with my finger. So there’s a huge possibility that Bette may be stepping into her father’s shoes before she even reached the legal drinking age? “That’s a heavy load on her shoulders..” I mumble weakly as I think about the girl who I treated like a second child.

“I know,” He said in a resigned tone. “A young girl at the helm of one of the most powerful corporations in the world? That’s too much pressure and responsibility for anyone to take, let alone a teenager.”

“I agree.” I managed to get out.

“That’s why I believe that she has to follow her dream and attend Yale. She needs to be molded and prepared by the best.” He says with so much conviction. “An Ivy League education will do her good when she takes over the company. You see, she might be the boss, but that won’t stop the elitists with whom she’s going to be doing business with from belittling her leadership. Those people may act like meek, well-bred lambs – but they are a cruel and condescending lot. They measure one’s abilities by their accomplishments, by their degrees. No matter how brilliant my daughter is, if she is not a product of an elite university, they will look down on Bette and make fun of her behind her back.” He frowns and turns a nice shade of red. I could see him gripping the edge of the table tightly, trying to reign in his temper. “My daughter does not deserve to be ridiculed. And what angers me the most is the painful possibility that I won’t be around to protect her from all of that.” His angry expression fades into that of genuine sadness.

I sit quietly and contemplate on the things he had just said. I know what it feels like to be bullied for my achievements – or lack of it. Moving to LA, I had initially applied for a nice steady paying office job, even though I hated that kind of work. Of course, the company was looking for college graduates, so that instantly killed my chances. So I know what it felt like to be laughed and looked down upon for my so-called educational handicap. But it must be another thing entirely when one is rich and powerful – since they were expected to come from the best since they could afford it. “Did you try talking to Bette about it?” I ask after a few moments.
