Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)
“No worries, I’m glad you enjoyed the meal.” Porter tells me. Once again, he snaps his fingers and prompts his butler into action. Igor, as I had named the snooty guy inside my mind, starts ringing a small bell to alert his fellow servers. In an instant, the table was cleared and we were left all alone.
Seeing that he finally had my undivided attention, Porter cleared his throat and leaned back against his chair. “If you don’t mind, can we resume our discussion now?” He asks me politely. I see the determination in his eyes. I’m now painfully reminded that I’m sitting with one of the world’s top businessmen. He has no time for idle chit-chat, he wants to go straight to the point.
“Sure, fire away.” I nod my head and wiggle my ass on the seat, trying to find a comfortable position.
For the second time, he begins telling me the story of what had happened after his daughter had moved out. He began sharing his frustrations regarding the suck-ups in his company, his health, Bette’s stubbornness and a lot more. This time, I listen good. The man has earned it after sitting through an entire meal with me and my blackhole of a stomach. Hearing him speak, I now have an idea where he’s going with all of this.
“You want to talk about USC.” I say quietly as he rounded up his rant. He nodded accordingly.
“You don’t want your daughter to go to USC.” I point out what I believe is true. My tone is neither accusatory nor hostile, so he didn’t answer back in anger. Instead, he replies with another nod.
“If you don’t mind me saying, I believe that you feel the same way as me.” He says calmly.
“What makes you say that?” I think my eyebrows are now permanently glued to my forehead.
“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to sound rude. I just think that you wouldn’t have uprooted your family from a comfortable life on the farm and enrolled your daughter in an upscale academy like Redwind if you didn’t want her to end up in an Ivy League university. She could’ve stayed in a public school in North Carolina and still be accepted in USC or any other university without problems.” He says matter-of-fact.
