Heart of Glass: Home is Where the In Ground Tub Lies

    “Ow.” Bette said meekly.

“Oh Jesus Christ.” Helena threw open drawers, finding a clean white towel, and practically leapt upon the other woman. “How did you do that?”

Bette’s right hand had slipped; her left hand had a gaping cut.  The knife she used to cut bagels was a bit sharp for the job, and Bette had missed the bagel all together.

“Oh dear. I think I was busy watching you.” Bette said with the same meek tone.  Helena grabbed her shoulder firmly just in time, just as the brunette slumped against her slightly.

“It’s just a bit of blood darling.” Helena said with a shake of her head.  She ran Bette’s hand under the facet, wondering if they would need to get to a hospital for it.  When the blood ran quickly away, she decided on the towel for now.  “Want to let a doctor see this?” She asked.

“No.” Bette said with a woozy smile.  “Blech. But I’m sure it’s fiiiiine.”

Helena snorted, rolling her eyes. She sat Bette down and finished breakfast.  Though she remained a bit dizzy—and Helena had a thought that perhaps the cut wasn’t Bette’s only problem this morning—they decided against the hospital visit in the end.  Antiseptic and a bandage, administered by Helena, allowed Bette to crawl into work a few minutes late.

Helena drove Bette to work as a consequence of their strange mishap.  She agreed to take her car for the day, and would pick her up after work.  Bette figured it was a good excuse to allow Helena transportation for job searching purposes.

As it turned out, Helena would need the car to pay a visit to her mother. Peggy called mid-afternoon, wanting to discuss Helena’s future prospects.

Peggy was less than pleased when her daughter slumped into a chair before her, twenty minutes late, wearing a faded and torn pair of cutoffs and a black bikini top underneath a black hoodie.

“You look like a fifteen year old hoodlum.” Peggy said with an annoyed sigh.

“Yup.” Helena was eating a long string of licorice, just for effect, having bought it on a whim on her way to lunch in a respectable restaurant with her image-conscious mother.

    1. *still whispering* damn, i screwed up the rating. the NEXT chapter is going to be far too embarassing for me to post in this coffee shop. sorry for the boredom on this one;)

    2. I wasn’t bored at all. I like the pace you are taking with this story. It only means there is more too come and I for one can’t wait. Great update!

    3. Boredom? Are you kidding? There isn’t anything remotely boring about your depiction of Belena interactions, including the nonsexual ones. And there’s more psychological insight in one of your chapters than IC can muster in an entire season. In this story, I’m looking forward to (among other things) Tina’s discovery that Bette and Helena’s connection runs far deeper than her “anomaly in the fabric of the universe” explanation would suggest. In the meantime, bring on the smutheth!

    4. If it makes you feel any better you can pretend I’m whispering, too. No, not boring HB. Actually, Helena’s odd and shifting moods remind me of what it was like to be an adolescent (long ago, but I can still remember), although the ‘rents never gifted me with a 5 bedroom house. Frankly HB, I think the bathrooms should outnumber the bedrooms (one for each, plus a couple more public), but I’ll get over it. But seriously, this may really be Helena growning up, despite her advanced age (hah,I should be so young). She’s alread been stripped of the underpinnings that she’d defined her identity by and is in the process of rebuilding it without the glamorous trappings that may have blinded her in the past. And she’s got Bette, which should make it less painful. Liked the licorice. Carry on.

    5. It was not boring at all, we get to see that Peggy helped her daughter and that Bette and Helena are seeing one another in a different light. And Al gotta love her, a good freind to Helena. Great chapter Hel

    6. Wot! Boredom?! Pfft, I’m nae bored! Bette and Hels, once again, got a touch of the nearlies… hm, mayhap soon, but what’s all this about things being thrown off then? Whatchoo talkin bout hb? Helena is worried, and a worried Helena means that I am suspicious… Aye, very suspicious. More please… cheers…

    7. Not bored!! never bored, Bette and Helena rock. What happened to throw them off??? Was it black licorice or red? I say a five bedroom, 3 bath house qualifies as pretty big to me, but what do I know. I vote for an injury free Bette from here on out..and also that Tin as’s name is erased from their collective memory…they need to think about each other, which brings me back to…what happened to throw them off?

    8. y’all crack me UP. i’m back in the public cafe, laughing like a fool…people are looking at me. i don’t know how they describe those tubs, but you know, the ones that are in the ground kinda like a swimming pool. they’re HUGE. total fantasy item for folks like me. you’re all going to hate me for the next chapter, but…well hopefully not. lol
