Heart of Glass: Home is Where the In Ground Tub Lies

“Darling.” Peggy reached for her daughter’s hands, rubbing them as though she were trying to rub life into them. “Are you all right?”

The question was so sincere that Helena had to put her candy and attitude aside. “I’m all right…just…in a mood.”

“Ok. Well, of course.” Peggy gestured toward the menu, leaning back for the time being. “Do choose something decent for lunch.  It worries me to see you eating synthetic plastics and sugar like an American teenager. Order a salad.”

Helena laughed out loud, shaking her head. “Ok, I will.” She was not so secretly pleased to be treated maternally for a change.  She even allowed Peggy to reach out during their lunch, moving her hair aside, wiping something from her cheek.  Though, she was unprepared for the extent of her mother’s generosity.

“What?” She asked, to an unexpected offer.

Peggy held out a newly minted set of keys. “This is for you. I’ve purchased you a new home.”

“I’m not sure I want it.” Helena said, her eyes on the silver items dangling from Peggy’s hand.  “Shouldn’t I stand on my own two feet? Get a job? Pay rent?”

Peggy withdrew the keys with a sigh. “Well, it does turn out that the task is harder than I had anticipated. Might I add as well—the house is modest, by your standards, so it should not offend your pride too greatly.”

“Well now I’m curious.” Helena laughed, raising her wine in a kind of toast. “Shall we shop for new décor this afternoon?”

“I’m afraid you’ll be on your own for that, my darling.” Helena sighed, watching as credit cards and neatly clipped hundred dollar bills emerged from Peggy’s purse.

“I’d rather you came with me.” Helena said stubbornly.

Mother and daughter stared tensely at one another for a few moments.

“Now aren’t we pushing the bonding thing a bit far?” Peggy asked quietly.

“No.” Helena’s voice wavered slightly. She waited for the money and plastic to disappear, and for the house keys to fall neatly back into Peggy’s purse. When these things did not happen, she reached for them at last. “I don’t want things to be like they were before. I don’t want to be like I was before.”

    1. *still whispering* damn, i screwed up the rating. the NEXT chapter is going to be far too embarassing for me to post in this coffee shop. sorry for the boredom on this one;)

    2. I wasn’t bored at all. I like the pace you are taking with this story. It only means there is more too come and I for one can’t wait. Great update!

    3. Boredom? Are you kidding? There isn’t anything remotely boring about your depiction of Belena interactions, including the nonsexual ones. And there’s more psychological insight in one of your chapters than IC can muster in an entire season. In this story, I’m looking forward to (among other things) Tina’s discovery that Bette and Helena’s connection runs far deeper than her “anomaly in the fabric of the universe” explanation would suggest. In the meantime, bring on the smutheth!

    4. If it makes you feel any better you can pretend I’m whispering, too. No, not boring HB. Actually, Helena’s odd and shifting moods remind me of what it was like to be an adolescent (long ago, but I can still remember), although the ‘rents never gifted me with a 5 bedroom house. Frankly HB, I think the bathrooms should outnumber the bedrooms (one for each, plus a couple more public), but I’ll get over it. But seriously, this may really be Helena growning up, despite her advanced age (hah,I should be so young). She’s alread been stripped of the underpinnings that she’d defined her identity by and is in the process of rebuilding it without the glamorous trappings that may have blinded her in the past. And she’s got Bette, which should make it less painful. Liked the licorice. Carry on.

    5. It was not boring at all, we get to see that Peggy helped her daughter and that Bette and Helena are seeing one another in a different light. And Al gotta love her, a good freind to Helena. Great chapter Hel

    6. Wot! Boredom?! Pfft, I’m nae bored! Bette and Hels, once again, got a touch of the nearlies… hm, mayhap soon, but what’s all this about things being thrown off then? Whatchoo talkin bout hb? Helena is worried, and a worried Helena means that I am suspicious… Aye, very suspicious. More please… cheers…

    7. Not bored!! never bored, Bette and Helena rock. What happened to throw them off??? Was it black licorice or red? I say a five bedroom, 3 bath house qualifies as pretty big to me, but what do I know. I vote for an injury free Bette from here on out..and also that Tin as’s name is erased from their collective memory…they need to think about each other, which brings me back to…what happened to throw them off?

    8. y’all crack me UP. i’m back in the public cafe, laughing like a fool…people are looking at me. i don’t know how they describe those tubs, but you know, the ones that are in the ground kinda like a swimming pool. they’re HUGE. total fantasy item for folks like me. you’re all going to hate me for the next chapter, but…well hopefully not. lol
