Heart of Glass: Home is Where the In Ground Tub Lies

“of course not.” Bette said with a shrug. She really didn’t. Helena’s struggles looked too familiar, hit too close to home.

“Anyway.” Helena said, her arms crossed, standing beside Bette. “I was just annoyed. That we couldn’t just do whatever felt right. Why can’t we just…do…what we want?…I don’t know. I’m tired.”

Bette nodded, knowing that their non-linear conversation had little to do with Tina, or kissing or not kissing. Helena looked exhausted. Bette had the sudden urge to cancel their after party.  She wanted to lead Helena into the house.  She wanted to sit with her, close to her, and just talk.  If it turned into something more, she wanted to let it, without care or worry of what anybody would think.

“Are you sleeping at Alice’s tonite?” She asked instead. An awkward silence followed.

“Yeah, I guess I am.” Helena liked Bette’s voice. She liked it where she stood. Perhaps, she thought, she could stay rooted in Bette’s driveway, leaning on this old car, her right arm glued to Bette’s left one. She would never sleep, nor eat, nor have sex again.  She would grow like a tree.

“Ummmm…Helena?” Bette touched her elbow with the tips of her fingers. “Let’s go back in, ok?”

“Ok.” Helena managed. They walked back up the porch, and Helena had the sudden overwhelming urge to sleep. “Can we cancel the party?” she asked.

Bette nodded wordlessly. She would call Alice and Shane.

They walked into the house with that growing warmth between them again.  Neither was ever really annoyed with the other, they were really just tired.

“and can I…” Helena paused at the end of the hallway. Bette nudged her further along and they walked into the guest room.

“Of course.” Bette replied. “I’ll get you some things for the morning.” She watched as Helena walked away, sitting lightly on the bed as though she worried it might break.

When Bette returned to the guestroom, towels and a cup of tea in hand, Helena had already stretched out on the bed. She was fast asleep. Bette placed the tea on the bedside table and the towels on an antique wooden chair which was a recent acquisition.

    1. *still whispering* damn, i screwed up the rating. the NEXT chapter is going to be far too embarassing for me to post in this coffee shop. sorry for the boredom on this one;)

    2. I wasn’t bored at all. I like the pace you are taking with this story. It only means there is more too come and I for one can’t wait. Great update!

    3. Boredom? Are you kidding? There isn’t anything remotely boring about your depiction of Belena interactions, including the nonsexual ones. And there’s more psychological insight in one of your chapters than IC can muster in an entire season. In this story, I’m looking forward to (among other things) Tina’s discovery that Bette and Helena’s connection runs far deeper than her “anomaly in the fabric of the universe” explanation would suggest. In the meantime, bring on the smutheth!

    4. If it makes you feel any better you can pretend I’m whispering, too. No, not boring HB. Actually, Helena’s odd and shifting moods remind me of what it was like to be an adolescent (long ago, but I can still remember), although the ‘rents never gifted me with a 5 bedroom house. Frankly HB, I think the bathrooms should outnumber the bedrooms (one for each, plus a couple more public), but I’ll get over it. But seriously, this may really be Helena growning up, despite her advanced age (hah,I should be so young). She’s alread been stripped of the underpinnings that she’d defined her identity by and is in the process of rebuilding it without the glamorous trappings that may have blinded her in the past. And she’s got Bette, which should make it less painful. Liked the licorice. Carry on.

    5. It was not boring at all, we get to see that Peggy helped her daughter and that Bette and Helena are seeing one another in a different light. And Al gotta love her, a good freind to Helena. Great chapter Hel

    6. Wot! Boredom?! Pfft, I’m nae bored! Bette and Hels, once again, got a touch of the nearlies… hm, mayhap soon, but what’s all this about things being thrown off then? Whatchoo talkin bout hb? Helena is worried, and a worried Helena means that I am suspicious… Aye, very suspicious. More please… cheers…

    7. Not bored!! never bored, Bette and Helena rock. What happened to throw them off??? Was it black licorice or red? I say a five bedroom, 3 bath house qualifies as pretty big to me, but what do I know. I vote for an injury free Bette from here on out..and also that Tin as’s name is erased from their collective memory…they need to think about each other, which brings me back to…what happened to throw them off?

    8. y’all crack me UP. i’m back in the public cafe, laughing like a fool…people are looking at me. i don’t know how they describe those tubs, but you know, the ones that are in the ground kinda like a swimming pool. they’re HUGE. total fantasy item for folks like me. you’re all going to hate me for the next chapter, but…well hopefully not. lol
