Heart of Glass: Home is Where the In Ground Tub Lies

She sat in the chair for a few moments, watching as the other woman slept, before creeping out of the room to her own bed.  Sometime around dawn, she awoke to a bed that seemed colder and emptier than usual.  Tempted to go wandering into the guest bedroom after Helena, she rolled herself in the sheets and lay awake, fretting, until her alarm went off.

As a consequence, Bette was more than a little grumpy when her bare feet hit the floor at 7am.

Walking into the kitchen, she was struck by the silence within her house.  Helena must have been sleeping in, she surmised.  When the front door opened, Bette was therefore startled.

“Hey.” She called out.  Helena walked quickly in, out of breath and covered in a thin sheen of sweat.

“You all right?” Helena asked quietly. She wore her jeans and tshirt from the night before, but had rolled up her cuffs so that she could run easier.

“That’s ridiculous. How long did you jog?” Bette gestured toward the less than ideal work out clothing.

“What?” Helena walked in further, closing the door behind her. “This is fine. The jeans are tight, but they stretch a little. I just had to run—didn’t have a chance while I was behind bars. You look lovely.” She added this last part with a wink, taking in Bette’s pajama bottoms and a tank top that accentuated the lines of Bette’s tone arms and shoulders.

Bette snorted and shook her head.  She didn’t really mind the compliment—far from it—and certainly didn’t mind when the smiling Brit came up close behind her to inquire about breakfast.

“Bagels?” Helena asked softly. “Shall I cut fruit to go with?”

“Ok.” Bette felt tongue tied.  Helena’s hands touched her arms lightly from behind, squeezing in a way that felt familiar and tender.  “I also have yogurt if you want smoothies or something.”

“Sure.” Came the easy reply. Bette lost track of her own simple preparations.  She turned slightly, watching from the corner of her eye as Helena moved through her kitchen.  It felt so easy, this new level of interaction—it felt so familiar that it scared Bette a little. Perhaps it wasn’t fear she was feeling, but whatever it was, it made her head light.

    1. *still whispering* damn, i screwed up the rating. the NEXT chapter is going to be far too embarassing for me to post in this coffee shop. sorry for the boredom on this one;)

    2. I wasn’t bored at all. I like the pace you are taking with this story. It only means there is more too come and I for one can’t wait. Great update!

    3. Boredom? Are you kidding? There isn’t anything remotely boring about your depiction of Belena interactions, including the nonsexual ones. And there’s more psychological insight in one of your chapters than IC can muster in an entire season. In this story, I’m looking forward to (among other things) Tina’s discovery that Bette and Helena’s connection runs far deeper than her “anomaly in the fabric of the universe” explanation would suggest. In the meantime, bring on the smutheth!

    4. If it makes you feel any better you can pretend I’m whispering, too. No, not boring HB. Actually, Helena’s odd and shifting moods remind me of what it was like to be an adolescent (long ago, but I can still remember), although the ‘rents never gifted me with a 5 bedroom house. Frankly HB, I think the bathrooms should outnumber the bedrooms (one for each, plus a couple more public), but I’ll get over it. But seriously, this may really be Helena growning up, despite her advanced age (hah,I should be so young). She’s alread been stripped of the underpinnings that she’d defined her identity by and is in the process of rebuilding it without the glamorous trappings that may have blinded her in the past. And she’s got Bette, which should make it less painful. Liked the licorice. Carry on.

    5. It was not boring at all, we get to see that Peggy helped her daughter and that Bette and Helena are seeing one another in a different light. And Al gotta love her, a good freind to Helena. Great chapter Hel

    6. Wot! Boredom?! Pfft, I’m nae bored! Bette and Hels, once again, got a touch of the nearlies… hm, mayhap soon, but what’s all this about things being thrown off then? Whatchoo talkin bout hb? Helena is worried, and a worried Helena means that I am suspicious… Aye, very suspicious. More please… cheers…

    7. Not bored!! never bored, Bette and Helena rock. What happened to throw them off??? Was it black licorice or red? I say a five bedroom, 3 bath house qualifies as pretty big to me, but what do I know. I vote for an injury free Bette from here on out..and also that Tin as’s name is erased from their collective memory…they need to think about each other, which brings me back to…what happened to throw them off?

    8. y’all crack me UP. i’m back in the public cafe, laughing like a fool…people are looking at me. i don’t know how they describe those tubs, but you know, the ones that are in the ground kinda like a swimming pool. they’re HUGE. total fantasy item for folks like me. you’re all going to hate me for the next chapter, but…well hopefully not. lol
