Heart of Glass: Home is Where the In Ground Tub Lies

“They won’t be.  And you aren’t.”

And so Helena arrived at Bette’s place of work with a new and strange outlook.

“How is your hand?” She asked upon entering the office, closing Bette’s door gently in James’ rather curious face.  She waved at him politely and he finally moved away as she latched it shut.

“dunno.” Bette sighed, moving the bandage aside slightly. “it’s gross. You look at it.”

“Just leave it…don’t poke at it…” Helena checked to see if the bandage was secure.  Satisfied that the cut was on the road to healing, she gave Bette back her hand. “Shall we go? Alice called, she wants to have dinner at my new home. Will you come?”

“Your new…” Bette’s first thought was of Peggy, and it made her laugh brightly. “Of course. I need to stop off and change, then we’ll make our way to…” she left this hanging like a question.

“Not far from where you live.” Helena shrugged. “Three streets over.”

“but the houses in my neighborhood…” Bette struggled to put her jacket on as Helena walked back out. “They’re not that…big…huge…mansion-like…” She muttered finally.

The house, as it turned out, was big enough.  It contained five bedrooms, three bathrooms—one of which Helena wanted to renovate and made much larger, by taking out the walls to a small bedroom beside it—and a backyard pool like Bette’s own.  Still, it wasn’t what they were used to from the Peabody clan.

“Mummy chose it very carefully from what she said.” Helena’s voice contained a mix of pride and quiet joy. “Two of the rooms will be for the children. My room has the strangest thing—a wood burning fireplace. Why on earth would I have such a thing in Los Angeles?” She grinned at Bette and Alice, the first to arrive to her dinner party. Both women were wandering around, checking out fixtures and rooms.

“Your room is huge.” Alice added. “And empty, I might add…you need a chair or something. Let’s hit the antique store tomorrow?”

“Sure.” Helena grinned, wrapping her arms around her friend from behind.  This earned another in a long line of strange looks from Bette.  Helena and Alice had formed a closer bond in the last year than Bette had ever formed with Alice despite nearly a decade of friendship.  Bette wasn’t sure if she was jealous, and if she was, of whom.

    1. *still whispering* damn, i screwed up the rating. the NEXT chapter is going to be far too embarassing for me to post in this coffee shop. sorry for the boredom on this one;)

    2. I wasn’t bored at all. I like the pace you are taking with this story. It only means there is more too come and I for one can’t wait. Great update!

    3. Boredom? Are you kidding? There isn’t anything remotely boring about your depiction of Belena interactions, including the nonsexual ones. And there’s more psychological insight in one of your chapters than IC can muster in an entire season. In this story, I’m looking forward to (among other things) Tina’s discovery that Bette and Helena’s connection runs far deeper than her “anomaly in the fabric of the universe” explanation would suggest. In the meantime, bring on the smutheth!

    4. If it makes you feel any better you can pretend I’m whispering, too. No, not boring HB. Actually, Helena’s odd and shifting moods remind me of what it was like to be an adolescent (long ago, but I can still remember), although the ‘rents never gifted me with a 5 bedroom house. Frankly HB, I think the bathrooms should outnumber the bedrooms (one for each, plus a couple more public), but I’ll get over it. But seriously, this may really be Helena growning up, despite her advanced age (hah,I should be so young). She’s alread been stripped of the underpinnings that she’d defined her identity by and is in the process of rebuilding it without the glamorous trappings that may have blinded her in the past. And she’s got Bette, which should make it less painful. Liked the licorice. Carry on.

    5. It was not boring at all, we get to see that Peggy helped her daughter and that Bette and Helena are seeing one another in a different light. And Al gotta love her, a good freind to Helena. Great chapter Hel

    6. Wot! Boredom?! Pfft, I’m nae bored! Bette and Hels, once again, got a touch of the nearlies… hm, mayhap soon, but what’s all this about things being thrown off then? Whatchoo talkin bout hb? Helena is worried, and a worried Helena means that I am suspicious… Aye, very suspicious. More please… cheers…

    7. Not bored!! never bored, Bette and Helena rock. What happened to throw them off??? Was it black licorice or red? I say a five bedroom, 3 bath house qualifies as pretty big to me, but what do I know. I vote for an injury free Bette from here on out..and also that Tin as’s name is erased from their collective memory…they need to think about each other, which brings me back to…what happened to throw them off?

    8. y’all crack me UP. i’m back in the public cafe, laughing like a fool…people are looking at me. i don’t know how they describe those tubs, but you know, the ones that are in the ground kinda like a swimming pool. they’re HUGE. total fantasy item for folks like me. you’re all going to hate me for the next chapter, but…well hopefully not. lol
