Heart of Glass: Home is Where the In Ground Tub Lies
When everyone arrived, they ordered an array of sushi and noodles. Helena ran out quickly, borrowing Bette’s car once again (a detail not unnoticed by Tina, who quickly dismissed it as an anomaly in the fabric of the universe) and purchased a dozen bottles of ridiculously expensive wine.
“To Helena.” Alice said with a raise of her glass. “For buying the booze, and finding a home.”
“Cheers.” Helena said with a strange smile. It was surreal, really, having seen her mother off to the airport earlier that day, only to join this group of women. They were truly her family now. Even her children were barely around. The thought made her sadder than she could imagine one may ever feel, in the midst of so many positive developments. Perhaps with some money and a place to stay, she and Winnie could work out a new custody arrangement. Summer vacation would be coming up soon.
“Helena?” Tina leaned over and touched her arm carefully. “Are you all right? You seem…well you’re quiet…”
“Fine, fine.” Helena shrugged. “I bought furniture today.” She said brightly. The table responded with appropriate murmuring and encouragement. “a bed, mainly.” She thought about it. “sheets…oh, and this table, though I’m sorry that the chairs do not match.”
Alice snorted, lifting her wine to her lips. She paused, looking around and suddenly realizing how little Helena actually had.
“Don’t you want to buy more? Go out and splurge a little?” Bette asked these questions, only now she was the one with the strange look in her eye. Helena wasn’t certain that she liked the look she received. Bette didn’t seem to recognize her all at once.
“No…I’m not fussed.” Helena shrugged. Underneath the table, while the other women chatted amongst themselves, Helena stretched her legs. When the outside of her thigh met the outside of Bette’s leg, she rested there. Their eyes remained on one another, and Bette moved her leg closer. They exchanged a smile before returning to their food.
Nothing more was said about their night together, for a week or more. Something happened to throw them off—something Helena worried might throw them off in a permanent sense.

*still whispering* damn, i screwed up the rating. the NEXT chapter is going to be far too embarassing for me to post in this coffee shop. sorry for the boredom on this one;)
I wasn’t bored at all. I like the pace you are taking with this story. It only means there is more too come and I for one can’t wait. Great update!
Boredom? Are you kidding? There isn’t anything remotely boring about your depiction of Belena interactions, including the nonsexual ones. And there’s more psychological insight in one of your chapters than IC can muster in an entire season. In this story, I’m looking forward to (among other things) Tina’s discovery that Bette and Helena’s connection runs far deeper than her “anomaly in the fabric of the universe” explanation would suggest. In the meantime, bring on the smutheth!
Oops. Spell-check: smuteth. It’s a fabulous new word. I should really learn how to spell it.
If it makes you feel any better you can pretend I’m whispering, too. No, not boring HB. Actually, Helena’s odd and shifting moods remind me of what it was like to be an adolescent (long ago, but I can still remember), although the ‘rents never gifted me with a 5 bedroom house. Frankly HB, I think the bathrooms should outnumber the bedrooms (one for each, plus a couple more public), but I’ll get over it. But seriously, this may really be Helena growning up, despite her advanced age (hah,I should be so young). She’s alread been stripped of the underpinnings that she’d defined her identity by and is in the process of rebuilding it without the glamorous trappings that may have blinded her in the past. And she’s got Bette, which should make it less painful. Liked the licorice. Carry on.
And bring the smuteth, you Jezebel!
It was not boring at all, we get to see that Peggy helped her daughter and that Bette and Helena are seeing one another in a different light. And Al gotta love her, a good freind to Helena. Great chapter Hel
Wot! Boredom?! Pfft, I’m nae bored! Bette and Hels, once again, got a touch of the nearlies… hm, mayhap soon, but what’s all this about things being thrown off then? Whatchoo talkin bout hb? Helena is worried, and a worried Helena means that I am suspicious… Aye, very suspicious. More please… cheers…
I forgot to ask earlier: What’s a ground tub?
sorry for being a silent reader…really enjoying this fic…PPS.
Not bored!! never bored, Bette and Helena rock. What happened to throw them off??? Was it black licorice or red? I say a five bedroom, 3 bath house qualifies as pretty big to me, but what do I know. I vote for an injury free Bette from here on out..and also that Tin as’s name is erased from their collective memory…they need to think about each other, which brings me back to…what happened to throw them off?
funny…I would say a ground tub is a tub….in the ground????
y’all crack me UP. i’m back in the public cafe, laughing like a fool…people are looking at me. i don’t know how they describe those tubs, but you know, the ones that are in the ground kinda like a swimming pool. they’re HUGE. total fantasy item for folks like me. you’re all going to hate me for the next chapter, but…well hopefully not. lol
Are we talking hot tubs here? Those recreational items with heated water, jets and sound systems?
