Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
”And… you need to start paying yourself a fee, immediately after the assets transfer to your charity,” he added. ”That’s both in the will and in the instructions, Bette.”
She leaned back and shut her eyes.
”This is a lot to take in, Jackson.”
He reached across the table and squeezed her hand. ”You don’t need to figure everything out right away, Bette.”
He fell quiet while Bette continued to lean back, resting her head on the back of the chair.
”Let’s stand pat, then,” she said after a minute. ”In this market, it won’t make sense to unload things, anyway. Keep the assets invested where they are currently, at least until I can plan things out more thoroughly.”
He nodded in agreement. She added, ”And I’d like your help in forming a board.”
”A board? For what?”
”For the foundation,” she answered. ”An independent board with whom I’ll consult at least annually.”
He frowned a little and didn’t respond right away.
”I can help you, of course, and stay around, at least for a year,” he paused. ”But why form a board?”
She shook her head. ”I want you to be legal counsel for the foundation’s board for the immediate period, not for me personally. And I want the board in place because I want structure for the changed circumstances under which the foundation will be operating.”
He sat back, scratching his chin absentmindedly. ”The board is a sound idea. But frankly, I hadn’t thought about what I’d be doing after ….”
”Jackson, if you’re trying to say that you don’t see yourself associated with this long-term, you don’t have to sugarcoat it, you know,” Bette interrupted him.
He shook his head, ”No. No, that’s not what I meant to say. I’m flattered that you want to retain me. But my experience and practice hasn’t been focused on charities, Bette. I’d be happy to recommend a firm who’d be more suitable, though.”
She regarded him quietly, weighing everything he’d been saying, and then responded carefully, ”Fair enough. I propose to retain you for six months, while I restructure things, and you can help me interview potential firms or counsel. Ok?”
“Agreed,” he answered, and extended his hand. She shook it and gave him a grim smile.

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.
What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
