Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

Jackson resisted his impulse to immediately soothe the hunched figure, and decided to let her have a good cry. He bent forward and rested his elbows on his thighs, cradling his head between his hands. He rubbed the tears that threatened to spill out of his eyes with the back of his hand and then, after several minutes stood and walked to the seat next to Bette. He gently squeezed her shoulders, ”Bette, I’ll be in the room I told you about. Talking to Miller.”

She felt for the chair behind her, nodding her head to indicate she understood what he’d said as she half stood and then sat on the chair.

    He left the room quietly.

”She alright?” Miller asked when he joined her in the hallway outside the chapel.

He blew out a breath. ”She needs a moment.”

”Let’s talk here,” he said after he collected himself.

Bette pulled the door open, and called out softly, ”Jackson, you still in here?”

Jackson stood up from the chair he’d been sitting on, and responded, ”I’m here.”

They exchanged a quick smile.  Bette sat on the chair on the opposite side of a low slung table next to the chair he’d been sitting on.  ”I just checked on Diane.”

They fell silent, lost in thought about their friends, fighting for their lives, under the knife of surgeons who were scrambling to save their lives.

She blew out a shaky breath, ”So, where do we start?”

”From where we left off about Peter’s will….”

”He’s going to make it,” Bette said quickly.

”In case he doesn’t,” he pressed. ”How do you want to proceed?”

”I assume he’s planned for immediate next steps in the event something happens to him?”

”He and I have worked out some arrangements, yes,” Jackson responded.  ”But those instructions aren’t related to the assets and other things he’s passing to you …”

”What are the arrangements you’ve agreed on?”

”Ummm… about funeral services, the staff in his yacht, those who work for him in the various firms, other people who keep things going,” Jackson answered and then paused, feeling the weight of these new responsibilities for the work lives of all these dedicated people all of a sudden.

Bette pursed her lips and heaved a sigh, ”I see.”

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
