Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

”But I feel like I’m super-alert right now, doc.  Noticing everything.  And I can’t stop thinking about what happened ….” she added.

The doctor gave her a quick squeeze on her shoulder.  ”We could give you something for that later if you think that it’ll keep you from sleeping.  I suggest you call your therapist if you have one.  Otherwise, I could also schedule a psych consult for you.”

Tina nodded.  ”I’ll call Dan, tell him what’s happened….”

The doctor added, ”if you want to, I could explain to him what’s been done for you, and what’s been given to you already.”

Tina looked up at him again and smiled, ”thanks.  That should help.”

Miller reached the next floor up and consulted her watch.  She sent a quick text to Jackson to tell him she was reaching the chapel.  He texted her back to tell her he was standing just outside it.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Minutes later Miller called out, ”Jackson?”

He looked up from his phone and saw a dark-haired woman approaching.  The woman sported a stylish short bob with hair tucked behind her ears and feathery bangs sweeping over her forehead.  She was about 5’ 7”, trim, and moved with feline grace. She covered the distance between them quickly and noiselessly.

”Miller?” He answered with a surprised tone.

”Yes,” she responded in a low, melodious voice.  She saw that Jackson was looking at her with appraising, admiring eyes.  He must know that I’m gay.

He swallowed before admitting, ”I didn’t think you’d look like …”

    ”Like?”

”Like … Um… the way you look.”

She frowned a little and said nothing in response.  She turned to peer into the chapel.  ”Are we talking in there?”

He shook his head, and then jerked his head to his left.  ”I saw a room here that doesn’t look like its being used by anyone.  Let’s talk in there.”

Instead of walking toward the room, though, he turned to open the glass door to the chapel, and then told Miller over his shoulder, ”I’ll tell Bette where we’re going.”

”She’s in there?” she asked in surprise.

    He nodded.  ”Praying.”

Jackson entered the chapel and walked toward the hunched figure, who was on her knees in the front row.  He sat behind her and bent his head.  They stayed this way in companionable silence for five minutes.  And then her sobs began to break the quiet and stillness of the room.

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
