Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
“This feels awkward,” she said. “I still don’t quite know what happened earlier. Do you have anything?”
“I’m having Miller look into it,” he answered, adding quickly, “Brom’s still being worked on, and we needed to act quickly.”
“You said it was suspicious that Peter absorbed three shots?” she asked quietly, and regretted asking so bluntly when she saw him wince.
He nodded, but said nothing, as he appeared to choke up.
Bette pursed her lips and glanced away from him. She looked around the dark room, and felt an anger build, all of a sudden. I’ve had it being in the dark. Being attacked in the dark tunnels, creeping around New York in the dark to escape being detected when I want to see Tina, sitting in this dark room, contemplating a dark future for my family, my friends. I’ve fucking had it with being in the dark!!
She stood up, and paced around the room. Then she whirled around to face Jackson. “Do you know how to reach the rest of the members of the core members of the leadership of the gold collective?”
He looked up in surprise. “Yes, I do.” His eyes narrowed. “What are you planning to do?”
“Call a meeting,” she said briefly.
“Now?” he asked in an incredulous tone.
“Yes, now. Especially now,” she answered. Her eyes had a hard, determined glint to them that he could pick out.
“Do you know what you want to say?”
“Damn right, I do,” she said coolly.
He licked his lips, thinking quickly. “Well, we can’t do it in Peter’s estate. I’m sure police will be investigating that area for quite a while.”
Bette blew out a breath impatiently. Suddenly, Jackson snapped his fingers. “I’ve got it! I can ask Miller to ask the security firm she’s enlisted to help her to organize a video conference room. That way we can guarantee a secure channel and everything.”
Bette nodded her agreement. “Let’s do it.”
“Great, let’s find her and get started on that. And then you and her can meet, also,” Jackson said.

Miller left the dark room she and Jackson had met in, and was thoughtfully walking to the elevators, intending to find the hospital’s café, grab a cup of tea, and access the latest files uploaded by the security firm. Lost in thought, she stepped out automatically when the elevator doors opened.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
