Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
Fifteen years later
Tina set her hairbrush down and pulled a few tendrils loose from the elegant swept-up ‘do she’d styled her hair in, to convert the severe ‘do into a more casual yet elegant chignon. Then she half turned from the body-length mirror to check how she looked from behind.
Not bad for a woman with a college-bound daughter.
She slipped into the nude high-heeled pumps she’d finally settled on to wear tonight. Earlier, while deciding about what to wear to the gathering, she’d first selected a shimmering, tight-fitting spaghetti-strapped “little black dress” paired with strappy heels, in black also. She’d worn that outfit for the “dinner date” Bette had planned for them the night before she’d left for a three-week long business trip across three continents. Bette had loved the outfit, and told Tina so repeatedly during their ”dinner date.”
But the black outfit wasn’t doing it tonight, for some reason. The business trip had left Tina exhausted and lonely, and the black get-up only seemed to emphasize her ennui. The fact that she’d pushed things to allow her to arrive earlier, shoehorning her last appointment into a Saturday morning breakfast meeting in order to catch another NYC-bound flight that afternoon, put her sense of exhaustion over the top. She’d almost regretted pushing for the changes after the tense meeting with a Hong Kong-based luxury-goods firm negotiating to have the next ten pictures Tina’s boutique studio would make feature their products. At the end of it, she ruefully reminded herself about why her team had postponed this meeting for last. She felt like she’d finally pushed herself too hard, and was grateful for the chance to sleep virtually the whole trip back to New York.
On the taxi ride to their duplex, thinking a quick trip to the spa for an express “maintenance” session and an invigorating massage would lift her, Tina made arrangements with the spa. Afterwards, feeling more “human” after the quick spa trip, she’d zipped the black dress on, expecting to like what she saw. But, as she looked at herself in the mirror for several minutes, she realized that it wasn’t the look she was going for tonight. ”I didn’t just fly thousands of miles, and push a grueling meeting forward to look like this….uggh! I feel and look tired in this dress, not sexy. This black is making me look … tired.”

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
