Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

”The chapel’s in the next floor up,” the nurse was telling her, while flipping around a floor chart.  The nurse was pointing to an area in a corner of the hospital.  She continued, ”it’s in the east wing of that floor.  You’ll have to almost circle around the floor counterclockwise if you take those elevators, though, because there’s no through access from this part of the hospital in that floor.  That hallway’s blocked-off by the wall of the ICU rooms…”

As the friendly nurse was talking the elevator pinged again, and from the corner of her eye Miller saw a wheelchair and heard the voice of the same nurse or doctor who’d been attending to Tina.  Miller interrupted the nurse and prodded her, ”can I take the stairs?  Just one floor up, right?”  She gave her the friendliest smile she could muster.

The nurse returned the smile, but puzzled about why the pretty lady asking for directions had slipped those sunglasses back on, hiding those mesmerizing azure, almost deep blue eyes.   ”Sure you can.  Stairs are just behind this station, that way,” the nurse jabbed her thumb over her shoulder.

Miller took off after flashing another smile and a quick, ”thanks!”

Tina had been idly observing the exchange between the woman at the nurse station and the nurse as the doctor continued to explain the scan he wanted to run to check in the baby.  She was wondering why the woman had flipped her sunglasses back to her nose and then almost ran down the hall, where it was dark, and where no one needed sunglasses.  She seemed to have been the same woman down in the lobby area, also wearing those sunglasses as she moved quickly to the elevators.  Maybe she has an eye condition?  Can’t take certain kinds of light?  Moves around really fast, though, for someone who could have an eye condition.   Compact, efficient movements.  Trim, athletic body.  Tall, same height as Bette.  Hmm… I seem to be hyper-alert. Noticing everything around me.  Must be the after-effects of everything that’s happened.

”You said my pulse has slowed down to normal range, right?” Tina asked the doctor, interrupting the flow of his detailed explanation.  She knew he and Liz had consulted with each other, and after a brief conversation with Liz, she understood the basics of the various tests that Liz and the doctor wanted to run.  She didn’t need the medical lingo for all of it, though.  Not right now.  Not after everything that had happened.

My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
