Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

Miller finished circling the two-block radius surrounding the hospital, satisfied that the report she’d received about the lack of surveillance activity in the area, apart from what Brom’s team was doing, had been accurate.  She compared notes with the small two-person team doing surveillance of the hospital and agreed with them that Miller should alert Brom’s team that this team was in the area and working with Miller.

She drove to a deserted area of the hospital parking lot, found a spot under a shaded area, and parked.  She exchanged text with Jackson to arrange a meeting. They decided to meet in the chapel of the hospital and then move a quiet spot near it if they could find one. They could then talk more extensively, and try to figure out what they could out of this mess.

Jackson said he was with Bette, and that they were in the middle of something.  They were to meet in 10 minutes in the chapel.

Miller removed her tablet from one of the backpacks and logged into the security firm’s cloud as she walked towards the glass doors of the hospital’s parking lot entrance.  She started accessing the files the firm had been uploading for Miller’s quick review.   A new file had just been uploaded about the rifle and bullets that the sniper used.  She read through it quickly and blew out a low whistle.

She was still thinking about the latest analysis when she entered the spacious lobby of the hospital.  She saw that there were only a few people around, and, save for the conversation a young family was having with a physician’s assistant and a nurse, there wasn’t much activity going on in the lobby. It felt like another slow Sunday afternoon in the hospital.

All of a sudden the double doors in one corner of the lobby that led to a tunnel that connected to the emergency area of the hospital burst open and a couple of techs ran through them.   During the brief moment the doors were open, the sights and sounds of an emergency room in chaos spilled into the erstwhile quiet of the spacious lobby area.  As everyone in the lobby swiveled toward the ER with questioning looks, the techs ran to the elevator bank behind the semi-circular check-in/welcome desks of the hospital.  Miller craned her neck in the ER’s direction to try to catch a glimpse of what was going on.

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
