Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

”Can you ask where they’re taking you?”

”If she’s alright and if you’re fine, can you leave her and meet me?  It’s very, very urgent!”

”Tina seems to be fine.  I feel ok, too,” Bette cut in.  ”And we’re heading towards….”

”Loudon,” one of the techs advised her.

”To Loudon,” she added.  ”If you’re in the same hospital, just tell me where I can meet you.  But can you please calm down, Jackson?”

”Okay, okay,” she heard him blow out a few breaths. ”Good that we’re in the same hospital.”

    ”With Peter?” she guessed.

”Yeah…. and…. and h-he-he’s not good, Bette,” he said quietly.  Bette was surprised by a stifled sob from the otherwise overly serious and gruff lawyer she knew him to be.  ”He’s critical…”

    ”What?!” she exclaimed.

When Jackson didn’t respond, and instead audibly sobbed into the phone again, Bette swallowed drily.  Was Peter in critical condition because of me?  Is everyone’s life on the line now because of me?

As if reading her mind, Jackson mumbled through his tears,”I don’t know if you were the target, though, Bette. Peter was shot up pretty badly.”

What is he saying?  What the hell is going on?

”Whoever was shooting would have seen him go down with that first bullet.  But he was hit with a few more even after he was down, they think.  When you get here, we should re-group,” he said.  ”P-p-Peter’s left a lot of instructions… a will… that we should go ove….”

”Let’s take it a step at a time, Jackson,” Bette cut in, in as gentle a voice as she could manage.  ”Let’s not go into things like a will or instructions or …”

”You need to listen to what he has to say, baby,” Tina interrupted her.

Bette looked down in surprise at Tina, whose eyes were still shut, but who’d apparently overheard enough of the conversation to cut in.

    ”What, T?”

”Listen to Jackson,” Tina repeated weakly.  The drop-off in the adrenaline rush that had flooded her body left her feeling spent.  And the calming effect of the drip was making her sleepy.

”How do you know what he…?” Bette started to ask when Tina’s hand loosened its hold on the brunette and fell softly onto the bed.  The blonde was out.

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
