Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
One of the techs who’d been monitoring Tina’s vitals gave Bette a small, reassuring smile. ”Her vitals are fine. Baby’s heartbeat is strong, too. We’ll be in the hospital in about ten-fifteen minutes and they’ll check on all of you there.”
”I’ll explain everything when we see each other,” Jackson’s voice interrupted Bette’s thoughts. ”I think someone’s about to give me an update on Peter.” He clicked the call shut.

Once she’d found out where the ambulances were taking everyone to Miller had asked her friend in the security firm that had lent her the SUV and extra tech and equipment to send a surveillance team to the hospital. Jackson had cleared the additional expenses, and had told Miller, ”find out what you can.”
Miller handed to them what she could collect from the sniper’s nest, taking care not to remove too much from the scene. She’d also transmitted to her friend the shots she’d taken. There was nothing in the sniper’s body that could identify him; and, unfortunately, the bullet that the rifle she’d used to shoot him with had been designed to explode on contact. So the man’s head had been literally blown off. But she was hoping the firm’s analysts could piece something useful together about the sniper. And most importantly, any leads to indicate who’d sent him. As much as she wanted Philby to be the unseen hand behind this, something was telling her it wasn’t. The partner of the man who’d attacked Bette in the tunnels had just been pulled over by police, as far as she could make out from the scattered intel Jackson periodically shared with her.
So this sniper had been sent by someone else. Judging from what she could see in the sniper’s nest, and from what she could scout in the area, this one had taken his time to scout the ideal vantage point to launch his attack. When she’d peered through her rifle, mimicking what the sniper must have been seeing, something told her that most of his shots had been precise.
Maybe he’d intentionally missed Bette with the first shot, and the succeeding series of shots on the others, who’d rushed toward Bette and Tina, were surgically taken. Maybe the sniper was really intending to hit others in the group? If that was the case, if Miller hadn’t taken him out, he probably would have hit more, or all of them, if only to disguise his true intentions. Miller theorized to Jackson that the three bullets shot into Peter were especially suspicious.

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.
What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.
Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
