Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

“I don’t know how you could explain all this,” Bette started.

“I’ll say that I don’t know who was shooting at us,” Logan answered.

“That’s actually true,” Bette said.  She was about to say something else when Logan cut her off, “No, Bette.  Don’t tell me anything else.  Best I don’t know anything.  I’ll let them look around, check things out for themselves.  You’ll need time to figure out what to tell them when they get to you.  Likely in the hospital.”

Bette nodded and squeezed his hand.

“I’ll ask someone to bring you all a change of clothes and everything.  But please call and tell George and I what’s going on with everyone ok?” Logan asked. He handed her a big plastic bag containing the handbags and phones that scattered by the front door and all over the top of the driveway in the midst of the chaos caused by the shooting. He’d asked one of the staff to collect the phones, wallets and purses once the teams of techs started putting his friends into gurneys. He knew that they would need to keep in touch with one another once people were rushed to the hospital.

Bette took the bag from him, nodded her thanks and then turned to quick-walk towards the ambulance where they took Tina to.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxx

As the ambulance Bette and Tina were on was rapidly making its way down the sleepy country roads, one of the phones in the plastic bag started to ring. Bette tried to ignore it, and was asking Tina, ”How are you feeling baby?” while giving the blonde another soft kiss.

”I think that’s yours honey,” Tina said in response, pointing at the plastic bag Bette was holding.

Bette gave her a small smile as she dug into the plastic bag to feel for the ringing phone.  ”At least we know that your hearing seems fine.”

    ”And memory,” Tina chuckled.

Bette glanced at the caller ID before swiping on the green ”accept” icon.  ”Jackson?” she asked in a surprised tone.

”Bette!  Where are you?” Jackson asked.  His voice sounded panicked.

”In the ambulance with Tina.  Where are you?”

    ”Is she alright?”

Before Bette could answer, Jackson followed-up with other questions in rapid succession.

    ”And you? Are you alright?”

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
