Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
“Her name’s Tina. She’s my wife, and she’s pregnant with our baby,” Bette added in a calm voice, enunciating slowly to make sure the lead tech who was kneeling next to her could understand her.
Another tech was flashing a penlight into her eyes while the lead tech continued to press on her abdominal area, and quickly examined her arms and legs. They asked her diagnostic questions, asking if she felt pain anywhere.
Bette answered their questions patiently but was only half-listening to them because she was paying attention to the techs who were examining Tina.
Finally, the lead tech said, “You seem to be alright, Bette, but I think you should go to the hospital anyway so that they can do a more thorough examination of you over there. You were saying that you have a heart condition right?”
Bette nodded but continued to strain her neck to the side to listen to what was going on with Tina.
“Tina, you seem to be okay, too. And the baby’s heartbeat is strong,” one tech was saying. “But we need to take you to the hospital anyway. The doctors there should have a look. Check into the baby, especially.”
The other tech had run off to fetch a gurney from an ambulance.
They all helped Bette and Tina to stand, and then assisted Tina onto the gurney when it arrived.
Someone started a drip into one of Tina’s arms as the blonde lay back. Bette looked questioningly at the lead tech. “Something to help her with the shock and trauma that will likely set in. Don’t worry, it’s safe for her and for the baby,” the lead tech answered. ”Something to take the edge off,” the tech added, and then smiled quickly at Bette.
Before Bette could respond, the lead tech cut for off, “Yeah you can go with her in the ambulance.”
There were fire engines that were pulling into the estate along with a few police cars. Logan, who’d rejoined them after standing aside to let the techs examine the women, squeezed Tina’s hand and kissed Bette on her cheek. “You go take care of Tina. I’ll deal with things here,” he said.
Bette nodded quickly at him and then squeezed Tina’s arm. She signaled to the lead tech that she needed to have a quick word with Logan before they left. The lead tech nodded but asked Bette to make it quick.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
