Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
The lead tech turned in his direction and was about to open her mouth to respond to the wildly gesticulating man running towards her when she felt her hands expertly shrugged off by some kind of martial arts move by Jules. Before she could react, Jules had pushed past her, and had advanced halfway to the ambulance, stumbling as she ran. Jules heard the other tech who had boarded the ambulance along with the gurney shout out from inside the ambulance, “We need to head out now!”
Jules stuck her hand into the entrance of the ambulance blindly, hoping someone inside would understand why she was fighting to be by her beloved’s side. She didn’t need to wonder for long.
Jules felt hands pulling her in almost immediately, and then heard the door swing shut behind her. She hurriedly crawled to the open seat offered to her as the ambulance peeled out of the driveway, sirens wailing.
The lead tech groaned aloud to no one in particular as she watched the rapidly disappearing ambulance, “Unbelievable!”
It wasn’t long before she was forcefully reminded about the chaos of the scene around her. In her peripheral vision, she saw another man being strapped into a gurney. She knew that the man had been struck by a bullet also, but it had cut through his shoulder area cleanly, unlike the man the other guy had called Peter. Peter was in far worse shape and the techs in the ambulance reported he’d taken at least three bullets.
The techs attending to the other man who’d been shot had signaled to her earlier that the man was alert but he’d lost blood. They’d found an entry and an exit wound made by a bullet that cut cleanly through muscle tissue. She was turning in their direction to check on him when collected shouts from the small team kneeling around a pair of women closest to the door made her change direction.
She ran in a deadsprint towards the group of techs huddled around the pair of women. Behind her, the gurney carrying Brom was being loaded onto a third ambulance. She saw in passing that George had run towards the tall, muscular man who’d been strapped to the gurney.
“What happened here?!” the lead tech shouted in the direction of her colleagues.
She saw an attractive blonde half-lying in the arms of a brunette, whose wavy hair was partly fanned out, covering her face. The brunette was protectively shielding the lower body of the blonde. Toned arms and legs were covered with blood. The blonde had been curled in a fetal position, facing the brunette, and had started to turn to lie on her back as the lead tech approached. She continued to clutch the protective arm embracing her, but seemed to be responding to questions the techs were asking her.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.
Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
