You (Part the Fifty-Fourth)
“I’m afraid I’ll do something –“
“You won’t! And even if you do, I’ll live. The cancer is gone, Alice. You have to start believing that, okay? This is just never gonna work if you treat me like I’m gonna break. I love you so much, but it needs to stop, baby. I can’t take it anymore. Even when things seem to be getting back to normal, you apologize to me for it and I hate that.”
“Maybe you’d be better off without me,” Alice said in a small, defeated voice. “Nothing I do is right. I’m probably just making you miserable, and I’m sorry. I don’t want to treat you like you’re gonna break, I just…I don’t know how else to be.”
“I just want things the way they used to be,” Dana said with a sigh. “I really do love you, Al. But sometimes you drive me insane. The only person who expects you to be perfect is you, don’t you get that?” Alice nodded mutely. “Then please quit acting apologetic for everything you do, all right? I’m sorry, baby, I’m not trying to scold you.”
“I know. But things can’t be the way they were before, Dana. Maybe some things, but so much has changed and I…I think, uh…maybe I need to take a walk. I’ll be back later,” Alice said, getting out of bed and putting clothes on. Before Dana could protest, she was gone.
“Fuck,” Dana muttered. The day had started off so well, and she’d thought they’d gotten to a turning point. She sighed and got dressed resignedly. The TV and Socks kept her company the rest of the day.
**********
Alice didn’t come home until three that morning. Dana was sitting up waiting for her on the couch, and she didn’t say a word when Alice walked in. She just stood up and wrapped her in a bear hug, and they stood that way for a minute or two before either of them said anything.
“I’m so sorry, Al. I was way out of line to unload on you like that. It’s unrealistic to want things back to how they were before, and you’re totally right about that. I never meant to make you feel bad, Alice. I really did love it. I love all our times together, okay? You could never hurt me, Al.”

OMG, the return of the white oxford, YAY!!! I am glad to see Dana voicing her wants to Alice. Too bad Alice is still treating her like a victim, rather than a survivor. I’m sure they will work through it though. And there’s nothing like defacing a billboard to bring everyone together, haha!
“Socks decided to tag along, and jumped out of her cat bed to walk directly under Alice’s feet down the hallway.” I can’t stop grinning and love that Socks. On a more serious note, I totally comprehend the fear and concern A had. D was right about seeking help. Unfortunately A was forever so stubborn fixing things her own way. I hope she would change her mind going to stay with H for a few days, instead go seek professional help. I do agree that a short separation would do them some good. D also needed work on her anger and not explode like that each time they ran into a problem. I enjoyed the billboard scene with AlShaDane supporting each other. Thanks MT for another well written chapter which by the way make whole lot of sense.
Excellent chapter, MT! My poor girls… I can see both viewpoints. Dana must feel more alive than she has since leaving the hospital now that she has the possibility of getting back into tennis in some form. It must really hurt to have that negated by Alice’s treatment of her. That being said, she shouldn’t have lit into Alice like she did. Alice has a right to be concerned — especially the day after Dana was so exhausted. I am anxiously waiting to see where you take this. I know they are in good hands. Oh, and the sex? Hot! I hope the oxford makes frequent appearances. Thanks for the update!
Again, you have surpassed yourself with a great chapter. just hope that Alice can get through this feeling and get back to her wonderful self. Loved the billboard!! PPS.
great chap muted!! i enjoyed the drama so entertaining…..i feel like dana is being a little selfish rite now poor al but thats me pps!!!!! can’t get enough :)
Once again a late response, sorry ’bout that. Great chapter. I’m a little torn on whose side I should be. I understand both Dana and Alice. I get each of their argumentations, but I think after this chapter I understand Dana’s point a bit more. Can’t wait for the next chapter!b. ps.: Socks is cute!
I really hope they can get through this, which I am sure they will! I know we need Angst, but I also love happy Danish too! Thank You for the update! Great Stuff!
I really loved this chapter. It’s unrealistic to think that if Dana had survived things would have been blissfully happy with no complications. You have created a story which allows us to see them as real people in the real world struggling with the difficult issues in their way…I love it and want more!!!
