    Lest I Forget (6)

Dr. Hernandez came rushing into the hospital a little after Shane and Charlie had led me to the lounge area. I only knew that because Gemma came by and nodded to Shane, who stepped out to talk to her. I was in no shape to do it.

Charlie was still holding me up, even sitting in the chairs. I felt like I’d slide to the floor if he wasn’t there to support me, and maybe it was true. I was absolutely deflated after crying into his shoulder for almost half an hour. He didn’t say anything the entire time, just let me break down. I think in the end I was better off for it.

After I’d composed myself a little, more out of exhaustion than any real effort to calm down, we just sort of sat there. Charlie’s arm was around my shoulders, and I was still kinda leaning on him. I was so out of it that it didn’t even occur to me that I could move a little to my right and use the chair for support instead of my son, and he didn’t mention it. I think he knew how broken I was, because every so often his hand would make a comforting circle on my back. I’m sure he didn’t think this through; he was talking to Shane, and the gesture seemed completely automatic. I was struck yet again by how much he resembled Alice. She was always doing little things like that.

If he didn’t tower over her by almost a foot, and if his voice wasn’t several octaves lower than hers, he would have been the spitting image of Alice. Well, I suppose he’d have had to inherit her eyes instead of blue-green ones, too, but aside from that, he would have looked exactly like her. This occurred to me as I sat in a sort of fog, vaguely listening to the sound of Shane and Charlie’s voices as they talked quietly.

Alice and I had been living in our house and raising Kallie when we’d decided to try to have another baby. It wasn’t some massive discussion or anything; she mentioned one day that she wanted a baby of her own, and it sorta went from there. She wanted to carry a child, which was fine with me. I probably could have gotten medical permission to carry if I’d wanted it, but I knew it would probably be a lot safer if she did it rather than me with the cancer history.

    1. Hey, i totally love this story it’s really cute and lovely and so well written and I just *sighs* I totally heart Danish. D was really cute going on about her son’s love of swimming and how much he was like A, I love the way the kids are like mini versions of them. Awwww at the Leisha and Erin thing, you must tell me more =) and thanks so much for posting again. YOU ROCK!

    2. I’m so happy you posted again. I missed his. Thank you for a wonderful chapter. And I’m with Loved_up, you must ell us more about Erin and Leisha ;) thanks again

    3. that was so tragically beautiful. have i mentioned within the past week how glad i am to have you back in this hemisphere? cant wait to hear all about it.

    4. I am grateful that you even posted on the road. That was very generous of you since we all have been waiting for this story to continue. God, that D was one stubborn goat and would never change. I am now worried her like the children that she would get sick too. That would not be good. I totally love that Charlie now maybe because he resembled and behaved like A. Ever so loving and loyal to his mothers. So the klutzy D started Charlie swimming, that was funny. Pardon my stupidity, was Howie the donor after all? If so, how come they never told him before? That would be another 5 years worth of therapy. Lots of subtle and not so subtle humor in this chapter, such as S spitting her coffee; “spot on the wall looked like Alice to me”; Charlie smelling like chorine; “the consent form written in gibberish.” Great news about A, I couldn’t be happier. Can’t wait till the next post. Hope you find your way back home safely. Thanks MT.

    5. Yay, you’re back and you’re posting again. :) If I were Dana I would have stayed at the hospital too. It’s kind of sad to read about their last days together (probably) and that they are not able to communicate during these days since Al is in a coma. :( I agree with Loved_up, I totally love the fact that Charlie abd Kallie are miniversions of Dana and Alice.:D

    6. Thanks so much for the new post, MT! Sorry to hear about your travel woes. Hopefully you can get back on your way soon. I also want to hear more about the Erin/Leisha interaction. ;-D This was another great chapter! I look forward to hearing more about Kallie and Charlie — sounds like there are some good stories there. Poor Dana. I hope she gets some rest. I wish she had gone to the hotel. You are starting to give me hope that Alice will make it through this illness. Is it just wishful thinking on my part?
