The call to her arms, Chapter 1

The blonde hadn’t told her sister in law about the confrontation with the Nazi soldiers and her miraculous rescue. She didn’t want to scare her and confront her with the reality that she could have been arrested.

Well… Without the intervention of a certain brunette.

“Bette should be here anytime now…” Kit said, suddenly interrupting her thoughts.

Tina looked at her… Kit and Shane had mentioned that name many times, and she had learned a lot about the woman, even before having met her.

She and Kit owned the jazz club, and Bette appeared to be the leader of their underground group. The club was the perfect hideaway for the Resistance, mainly because of its unrestricted and public access to the Germans. Who would suspect two women who, apart from demonstrating unequivocal friendliness toward the Nazi highest officers, made significant financial profits out of it?

What the Nazis ignored though, was that every single French coin they got from their drinking and partying directly benefitted the Resistance’s expenditure.

Bette had an American father and a French mother, but she had spent most of her life in Great Britain. When the Germans had invaded France and started bombing London in 1940, she had immediately joined the Army. But after hearing the call to arms and to resist from the French General De Gaulle, she had decided to go to Paris and had been amongst the very first founders of the Resistance. Her high rank in the British Army had allowed her to keep special relations with the British Headquarters in London, which greatly benefitted the cause and made her a very important figure within the network. Bette had met Kit in Saint-Germain-Des-Pres, and they had become associates. Kit refused to leave the country despite the relentless racism of the Nazis, and she only owed her salvation to the existence of her club. Indeed, behind that anti-Americanism that the Germans proclaimed, their passion for jazz was undeniable.

Kit managed the club while Bette was mostly involved in leading underground activities, but she would make sure to appear at the club on a regular basis in order to maintain her cover and her good relations with the high-ranked officers. Their little act had served the Resistance in countless occasions and the club had become one of the main sources of information for the network.
