The call to her arms, Chapter 1

She looked on as she saw the blonde tense when the German patrol got closer to her. She watched the relief reflected in her eyes when the soldiers finally passed her. And she understood when she saw the fear paralyze the woman’s whole being as she turned around and found herself facing the three men.

Her body language told the brunette all she needed to know, and she didn’t think twice. She should have though… She would repeat times and times again to her friends the ground rules of caution and risk assessment for the sake of the whole network, and how thinking ahead was the key to safety… And yet, thinking had been the very last thing on her mind when she had started walking toward the small group.

She still couldn’t comprehend why she had made that decision. But the moment she had met the blonde’s eyes for the first time, she had known that it was the right one. Yet her actions had been inconsiderate and she had been closer than ever to blow her cover. What if Colonel Zimmermann had decided to go back to the inexistent hotel? It had been a realistic possibility and the risk had been tremendous.

She knew all that… And what totally confused her was that she knew she would do it all over again in a millisecond…

The blonde appeared in her mind’s eye. She remembered the moment they had shared right before she had run away and that thought sent a blow to her heart. And when the woman had disappeared moments later, the loneliness she had felt had only added to her confusion.

She interrupted her musings when she saw the familiar street that was to lead her to her destination. She smiled… Good, she really needed to get a grip and occupy her thoughts. She took a deep breath in and inwardly resolved that she wouldn’t let herself get distracted again.

But as she neared the large wrought-iron gate, she had the odd sensation that it might be too late.

“Aunt Tina, do you like my drawing?”

The blonde looked at her nephew with a bright smile and picked up the sheet of paper.
