The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 2)

I just let him talk, to get it all out but he stopped for a moment. We could hear the tick tock of our grandfather clock in the living room.

Then he started up again. “You don’t fucking know anything Sissee! “ You don’t know what I see out there when I’m workin’ . All those queers trying to get their dick’s sucked in public bathrooms and those butchy lesbians acting all tough being cops, wearin’ that uniform as if they’ve got balls!

“They’re out there everyday in one way shape or form and it fucking adds up in my head. Yeah, and then I got a wife who wants to go visit her gay friend and all her gay friend’s gay friends. A wife who wants to have lunch with them and be with them as if it’s perfectly all right and I just wanna puke in a toilet but no, no, I never said anything. I let you do what you wanted to do just to keep peace between us. Just to hope you’d see the light, get it out of your head and appreciate your normal married friends for a change.”

“You’re way out of line, Howie.”

    “No, I’m speaking the truth.”

    “Maybe by your twisted standards.”

    “It’s not NORMAL Sissee!”

“If you’re that dead set against it why didn’t you ever try to stop me? Why didn’t you ever say anything about it?”

“What would you have done if I laid down the law around here and told you not to see Bette Porter anymore?”

“I would have found a way.”

“Exactly, and that’s why I never let on. But I’ll tell you this. I’m putting my foot down now. You’re not leaving this family. You’re not going anywhere! You’re my wife! You’re the mother of my children and I’m not going to let you rip us all apart just for something that won’t last more than a few months!”

“It’s too late for that Howie! I’ve been in love with her for 21 years!”

    “That’s bullshit! Fucking bull shit!”

I knew that line beyond reasoning with Howie had been reached and past. There was no point continuing our conversation. I got up and was careful to go to the left of the coffee table, giving him a wide berth.

    1. That’s scarey. You never really know what people will do when they drink alot. Even though Sissee’s seen him confrontional before, this has him really pissed. I would be afraid of him coming after me with a gun or physically abusing me. I think I would take Mary & leave & talk to him again when he’s sober. Thanks Sissee.

    2. Kbergin47, The verbal hits that Howie made were probably worse than any physical blows he may have inflicted. The situation has brought out a mean side that Sissee never saw before but she has taken him to the edge and it becomes – you are hurting me, so I am hurting you back – kind of thing. Perhaps he will be less hateful in the morning.

    3. Hi Sissee the writer, I am so into the storyline this time that I forgot I was on page 5 and the chapter was over already. I hope Mary will understand her mother, she seemed like a compassionate person. I don’t like Howie since Day 1. I know you, the writer, felt sorry for him and thought he’s always a good man. I know he was nice to Bette for Sissee’s sake only. Anyhow, the alcohol in him would definitely give him courage to say what he felt. That’s the dysinhibition of our thinking and feeling when we are not sober. It served good purpose sometimes – Sissee saw the real Howie now because of that…

    4. Bette’s Babe, Yes, Howie finally told Sissee what he thinks of Bette Porter and her lifestyle. He finally told her HIS truth, the kind of bigoted truth that is out there unfortunately, shared by shallow people who don’t even try to understand. It’s getting better though and you just wait for our Bette Porter here to stand up to this Howie person. They will have a show down, very soon.
